Dortmund have qualified with an 11-5 aggregate win. If they keep Reus fit they'll be hard to beat.

Liverpool FC relegated to pot two for Europa League draw as coefficient drops

Recent poor record in Europe will ensure a tricky group for Reds

Liverpool will have to settle for a place in the second pot for Friday’s Europa League group stage draw in Monaco.

The Reds’ UEFA coefficient, which is calculated based on their results in Europe over the past five years, has dropped to 47.078.

That puts them outside the top dozen clubs to qualify for Europe’s second-tier competition with the final line-up for the group stage to be confirmed once Thursday night’s play-off round second leg matches have been completed.

As a result, Liverpool could find themselves in the same group as the likes of Schalke, Basel, Napoli, Marseille, Villarreal or Fiorentina. Tottenham are also in the first pot but the Reds can’t be drawn against another English club.

Brendan Rodgers’ side tumbled out of the Champions League at the group stage last season and were then knocked out in the last 32 of the Europa League by Besiktas.

In the 2013-14 campaign the Reds didn’t even qualify for Europe and in Rodgers’ first year at the helm they lost to Zenit St Petersburg in the last 32 of the Europa League.

Liverpool didn’t make Europe in 2011-12 and the season before that they were knocked out in the last 16 of the Europa League by Braga,

It’s a far cry from 2009 when the Reds were the top-ranked club in Europe with a coefficient score of 114.077.

The draw for the Europa League group stage will take place in Monaco at noon UK time on Friday.

I really wanted us to do well last year in this competition, but I remember when I put the question up here last year, alot of people said they couldn't give a **** about it etc. I'm just wondering now how people feel about doing well in this big competition?

i want us to do well and winning it is another way of getting into the cl,also english clubs need to start doing well in europe as it cannot be to long now before we lose 1 of the cl places.

In its current format this competition is a distraction. Yes the carrot of CL is there for the winner, but its a long shot. We could be awesome all competition and still lose the final as most finals are an on the day thing. That's a hell of a lot of energy chasing something that the odds are stacked against. That energy would be better served chasing 1st place in the league. Another outside chance however at least you have the consolation that 2nd, 3rd and 4th bring a prize of sorts.

Yes we can play a different team, however the manager and coaches will still be travelling and setting up regardless if some players are left resting at home. That's why it's a distraction full stop.

However on the other hand, its a competition, we are in it and as such should go all out to win every trophy we can. That's why we have a squad. It's tough.

Yep. Way too many pointless games.

We have a qualifying game for a group that will consist of 6 games all over the furthest reaches of Europe. Which then if we get through takes us to the 2 legged last 32, a round that is populated by the people qualifying from the groups and the teams who finish 3rd in the Champions League.

In total it could be 17 games for us to win this thing. As opposed to 6 for the FA cup. West Ham could have played 23! It just feels too bloated.

I think Liverpool have to take this seriously as possible, for the sake of the Prems coefficient!

I also think the squad just about has enough about it as well.

Do we have a qualifying game? I thought we go straight into the group stage.
That rug really tied the room together.

It's a shame Southampton are out, it would have been nice for our signings next summer to have had some European experience.
