Wasn't it Carra who introduced it on the players coach to try and show all the foreign lads what real music sounded like? That's the version of the story I heard...

Maybe but then how would we all end up singing it?

It was an away trip bus that started it, from Kirkby, long before the Istanbul trip too but it was earlier that season maybe I think Millwall or Fulham away something like that.

I remember reading quite comprehensively that it was Fulham away - the game we won 4-2 (IGOR!!), if I remember rightly.

i was there for that game sat with the home crowd. my misses was shopping and at 2 nil down half time almost went to join her(and that never happens). Xabi came on at start of second half and turned the game on its head. what a player that day and i was gutted sitting watching all the celebrations in the away end biting my tongue

Remember a thread from the misty, murky, mutant and distant past on this...that Fulham game was my son's first match. We had to sit with their supporters behind the goal we refused to score in.

Muted renditions of ROF were heard on the way into the ground - we walked past many of the coaches from Liverpool. Heard it once or twice during the first half. I've always been a Johnny Cash fan and recognised it instantly - but wondered why we were singing it. 0-2 down and it's time to explain to your 6 yr old son that he supports Liverpool and that whatever happens, WHATEVER HAPPENS, the players in the red shirts will never give up. Never.

Anyway, if memory serves, it really got going after Xabi got number 3 (I think) but When Igor came on and got the 4th it really took off. As we were leaving the ground, m'boy on my shoulders, grinning, and waving the scarf, that's all you could hear - and we sang it (and shouted EEEEGGORRR...) all the way home on the bus.

Funnily enough, my first match, we beat Arsenal 4-2 ('64/65 ish?).

I'm sure someone on KT said that they'd heard it earlier? Dunno.

Heard a million different stories, but this is the one that seems to have the most credence.
