The major reason it cant be expanded is the roof is "self supporting" (there are no restricted views) according to an interview with the stadium projects manager in an article I read elsewhere

Now its my opinion that the "cant be expanded" comment is more to do with the cost of the expansion making it prohibitive (self supporting roof, new transport links etc..)

I may be wrong but I think that new build stadiums have to have a certain distance from the stands to the pitch due to UEFA regs

No - you build it once the size you want. It is not possible to have a bigger stadium unless you move to Kirkby or something.

Why would you ever build something smaller than you want to build it, then spend loads of money making it bigger?

It will be as big as it ever can be.
        Oh I don't know.

planning permission for 80,000 was applied for originally as far as i can remember. it was shot down due to the infrastructure in the area being unable to cope with such a high number of people on match day. 60,000 was seen as reasonable

Wasn't it discussed that the initial build was going to be around the 60k seater mark, with a view to expanding.

Keep the costs lower at first to help us remain competetive in the transfer market??

            I could be wrong.

77,000 as far as i can remember is what was wanted, then it went down to 55,000 which was largely due to GH being afraid of all the clubs resources being used. then back up to 61,000.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

              * After Tommy Lawrence had let in a fluke goal between his legs

The huge gulf in the costs is because the council insisted that any larger stadium must have direct transport links which of course would have increased the costings
