Very good left-back? Is it his worldclass positioning that sways your vote? His ability in the air or his tackling?

He's a decent left-back, but not in the long-term future of our defence. Yes, we did well with him in the side, but as a defender he's hardly exceptional. The succcess of our defence last season was more to do with the tactics and system, and the central pairing rather than Riise. A good squad player he is, but not an XI player.

Question: In the majority of our meetings with Chelsea, Riise hasn't played them at LB. Why?

EDIT: laughable was harsh. I retract that comment
If the quality of our defence last season was down completely to "the tactics, system, and the central pairing rather than Riise" how come we shipped in goals left right and centre when Riise was taken out of the back four?

CHELSEA SCORED 17 GOALS FROM DEFENCE LAST SEASON! Let's give up Riise eh so we can fall further behind. Oh silly me, Aurelio is a far better defender and will score more goals, bein Brazilian'n'all.

Everytime Riise played we kept our shape at the back, everytime Warnock or Traore played, Hyypia was dragged out wide and it left holes at the back. It's a no brainer REALLY. Oh.

So he had a poor game the other night? He wasnt the only one, and he was up against the quickest player on the pitch, while clearly lacking match sharpness. The fact he's even mentioned in the same breath as the Chavs suggests that his standing in the game has come on even more so.

He's a quality left back, most teams would be happy to have him.
      And that's yer lot folks.

Jesus the abuse you get for expressing an opinion...

I have retracted my "laughable" comment. Apologies to all... He's not a terrible LB, just not good enough IMO. He has defensive weaknesses that are easily exploited by top sides; the point I was trying to make by saying he hasn't played much against Chelsea. He is a LB that can play against mediocre opposition, but defensively is not good enough to be considered a longterm option in our defence.

I don't think it did. He isn't good enough to face the top sides as defensiveely he isn't good enough. Players like Robben and Ronaldo would rip him to shreds, Christ. he had trouble coping with the RM the other night.

He's been playing in the Premier League for about 5 years now, and has yet to be "ripped to shreds".

Why is this likely to start happening now all of a sudden?

In all of this I have yet to hear the Riise knockers say whowe are going to play instead of him. You know to improve our defensive record in the coming season.

6Sheep who called him a "useless defender" hasnt been back since page 1 to defend his comments
"With Ron Yeats in defence, we could play Arthur Askey in goal."

Do you have to put forward a replacement when saying you don't rate a player?
