Comparing crosses from deep and crosses from the byline is fun.
Crosses from the byline tend to travel away from goal and there for it is easier to get pace on the attempt on goal. Also the defenders are usually moving towards the goal and that is more difficult to do.

When you cross from deep more often then not the defenders are more or less standing still.

Beating the defender is a whole other matter IMO. Crossing from the byline does not mean you have gotten past the defender.
If you really get past him you have created a new situation. You are usually in the box and have many more options.

So having a player who can do that on a regular basis is indispensable. ( Ronaldo )

The only players who I have seen do that on a regular basis, besides Ronaldo, is Lennon and Robben. And Robben is not as sharp as he used to be.

No really. I think our squad has improved a lot since Rafa came and now we can afford to buy more expensive and fewer players. IMO we have proved that with our performances against Chelsea, Barca and ManU.

And then of course there is the fact that we have more money.

And also we need to start a season strongly.

well i woud tend to agree, i just have a feeling though that we are still building and will need abou 4-5 players in the summer. I dont mind really, once the additions are of real quality and can handle the squad system and the English style.

I don't mind having one winger of the 'cross and pass' variety, however, we do need one at least who is going to have a go at the defence with running and trickery. We don't have that at the moment anf that is one of the big reasons we are not converting long periods of possession into goals in the big games against the big teams.

I'm sure Rafa knows this and will rectify the situation in the summer

May I change this thread ever so slightly to the 'Wenger' question?

                              I think they're related somewhat.

Wenger - it seems to me - doesn't have wingers. Not in the 'normal' understanding of the term anyway. Henry (right footed) heads off down to the left corner flag, van Persie (left footed) hares off to the right. No room down either flank for the 'wide mid' to go so they cut inside.

And they can because, of late, Wengers' been playing a right footed on the left (Rosicky, Ljungberg) and a leftie on the right (Hleb).

And all this is ok, because you're essentially allowing space for the fullbacks to bomb forward whilst ensuring a goodly number of your colleagues are in/around the danger area.

All this must require intelligent movement/play from the players (something we're sadly lacking in) but, I think, it does show that beating the fullbacks - on the outside anyway - isn't the be-all and end-all that we might think.

Of course, we know that Wenger doesn't really believe in anyone other than defenders heading the ball - so that might explain it....

                              Frank.
                              Francis.

...."Any team that concedes as few goals as we concede is going to be tough to play against..." - Fernando Torres on Liverpool

And when I say 'play Gerrard on the left', I mean on the left

                              A defensive mid for £18m?

Aresenal aren't winning the league though are they? Chelsea and Manure are and they both have quality wingers.

When Arsenal won the league they did so with Freddie and Pires playing outwide, both cutting in and running into good positions and shooting etc whilst they had the stability of the likes of Viera in the middle. They weren't traditional wide men, in that, they didn't deliver loads of crosses, but they did run with ball, the attribute we are lacking at the moment.
