Benitez must be given time to secure title.

Benitez must be given time to secure title

    Mar 5 2007

by Nick Smith, Liverpool Daily Post

IT doesn’t need a flight across the Atlantic for George Gillett and Tom Hicks to see how the land lies on this side of it.

The Americans want to give the fans trophies. The fans want the Premiership trophy. So they didn’t have to be at Anfield on Saturday to know they’ve got some way to go before they can fulfil that dream.

Because Liverpool aren’t getting any closer to it – in fact, this campaign has simply been two steps back from the giant strides made in the previous one.

Then, Rafael Benitez led his side to their highest points tally of the Premiership era, a total just one point lower than United’s yet still a full nine off champions Chelsea.

But the gap was closing, the standards were being raised and with a full, glorious summer market opening up before Benitez it seemed that a bit of shrewd investment was all that was needed to take Liverpool even closer to that elusive 19th title.

Less than a year later, and Jamie Carragher is talking about “better players” being needed to end the frustrating wait. Firmly back to square one.

Liverpool are third, as they were then, but now they stand 10 points behind Chelsea.

And as for Manchester United? Liverpool more than matched them over 90 minutes on Saturday, but in wider terms, the champions-elect have shaken them off from the coat tails and raced away into the distance – now measured at 19 points.

Given that Americans are obsessed with statistics, the new major shareholders will be well aware of those facts.

But they should also be aware of how the only top-flight manager Benitez has yet to get the better of, Sir Alex Ferguson, was able to end his 26-year wait for an Old Trafford title and why, just 14 years later, he stands on the brink of his ninth.

Simply, because he was given time and money. Obviously there’s more to that when building the empire he has, but without those basics it could have crumbled before the foundations were in place.

Benitez is nearing the end of his third season at the Anfield helm – in Ferguson’s world he’s just a wee beginner.

When the Scot won the FA Cup in 1990, he was marking the end of his third full term with his first trophy. If he hadn’t won it he probably wouldn’t even have made it to the end of that campaign.

And it would take another three years for him to deliver the title the club desperately craved. After the same amount of time, Benitez already has an FA Cup and achieved Ferguson’s obsession of conquering European 13 times quicker than him.

Few would back against him doing it again following a successful job completion against reigning champions Barcelona tomorrow.

But it doesn’t change the fact that Liverpool see their rightful place at the top of the English game and this season has only gone to show how much higher the standards are that you have to reach to do it.

Certainly more so than in Ferguson’s time. In the first Premiership campaign of 1992-93, United could have taken the title with just 75 points – and that was in a 42-game season.

Win their next game and they will be on that total already after just 30 games.

The previous two seasons have seen Chelsea set a frighteningly similar pace and the year before that Arsenal didn’t even lose a league game on their way to the Premiership summit.

Ferguson didn’t have to snap anything like a similar stranglehold when he broke his title duck. Liverpool were ageing and their dominance was in decline, while a series of big-money buys finally edged Ferguson over the finishing line and he’s rarely looked back.

Nobody is in any doubt that Benitez is the man to bring similar triumphs back to Anfield, or more realistically Stanley Park.

But the letter to America reads, give him the same tools Ferguson had.

Time and money – and a lot more of both.

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Right now i think we are two years away from a title challenge, we need probably another 3 key players maybe 2 and even if we get them in this summer the team will have to adapt to incorparate their style.

BUT if we get a good early fixture run like the scum did this season we could build momentum and challenge next season.

I really believe the fixture list killed us earlier on in the season too many big games too soon and with signing 6 new players we just couldn't find any fluency to out game where as i have to take my hat off to Ferguson he signed Vidic and Evra in the Jan windo last season thus giving then half a season to fit into the team and with only one signing in the summer they found their rhythm quickly and the easy early fixture list ment confidence layed the foundation for their title win.

Beni seems to have Europe sorted. Needs to start developing a playing style for the PL now..

I think it could be next season when no 19 comes to Anfield
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

        * After Tommy Lawrence had let in a fluke goal between his legs

I think Carragher got it spot on in his interview

"What do you need to win the Premiership?"

          "Better players"

Nought wrong with how we play.

Three years and around 80M spent.

Yeah, making whole sale changes in the summer isn't going to help our cause.

Probably spend big on TWO players - a top quality finisher, and a top quality winger.

That should do us, and pray that neither of them get injured!

                  True.
But it appears that the stakes are higher now with Romans money and the Scum outspending us in their usual way.

What people are forgetting is that we've needed to spend that to keep up, let alone overtake the top 2 teams. Do you really think our 2003/4 team would come higher than 6th or 7th (or at best struggle to 4th at around 60 points)?

I also genuinely think that we've been ****ING unlucky this year. I can only recall 2 bad games - Arsenal and Man U away.

We lost games vs Everton, Bolton, Man U, Chelsea and Blackburn where we dominated and/or had more than enough chances. What a difference those 15 points could make.

Of course, some people might legitimately say it's not bad luck if you don't take the chances.

Bearing in mind the shambles that he took over from, our 82 points haul from last season was nothing short of miraculous given that we started the season in July with CL qualifiers (an extra 4 games there) played the Super Cup, went to Japan for the World Culbs plus won the FA Cup. That is an amazing turnaround.

It's a shame we haven't been able to improve or match that, but it's the case when you're starting from scratch and the turnaround of players is so quick and vast that it takes time to settle and et youyr rhythm.

If we want to make a serious bid for the title, we need to start buying better players, 1st teamers, not squad ones like Gonzalez and Pennant and we need to hit the gorund running. I think if we did not have the distraction of a CL qualifier at the start of the season, plus if we sign only 3 players at most, and they're of top quality, that would help enormously.

For the first time, I`m starting to have doubts this morning if we`ll do it in the league under Rafa

I`m not sure we`ll be doing anything in the CL against Barca if the Dude is playing
                        We need better attacking players!

                        Torres aint enough

It's not bad luck. Not taking your chances, especially as clear cut as some of them have been (ahem, Crouch, ahem), is inadequacy and inefficiency.

It would be much more worrying if we weren't creating chances at all, like under Houllier where we were creating only 1-2 chances a game.

Its not that simple imo your both right in that we do need 2 maybe 3 top players with regard to playing style we need to stop playing Momo and Alonso in the centre as Momo cant hit a barn door and Xabi just doesn't seem to get forward enough.

Look, we were Barcelona's match AT the Nou Camp, dicked all over Chelsea, and we outplayed Man U on Saturday - Van Der Saar and Ferdinand kept them in it - we're clearly good enough against the best teams in the world.

I think people are paying far too much attention to the scum's 90th minute sucker punch.
