Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

Got to say, I have some sympathy with this view.

There is some pretty nasty (Nazi) stuff goes down at Lazio, although I'm sure you'd get plenty arguing that it's just a minority, and I'm not qualified to judge. Gab Marchotti is no fool, and he ofen defends the whole 'Ultra' culture in Italy, claiming it's not all as we paint it here, and not entirely comparable with our Hooligan crews. Again - I'm not qualified to judge.

However, what is true is that without Lazio fans, we would have taken an even bigger beating (and worse) in Rome in 1984 than we did. The tales are legion of Police indifference and marauding bands of Roma fan on the way back from the ground, but many an isolated fan or group of fans were protected by the arrival of equally agressive - and knifed-up - Lazio fans. Given their pedigree as mentioned above, a bitter-sweet rscue that one was.

I'm sure you're right to suggest that the vast majority of Lazio fans are perfectly normal people with perfectly decent views.

My antipathy towards the club largely stems from its association with the Fascists under Mussolini, much as Real Madrid was the favoured club of the Fascist/Nationalist regime in Spain.

                Interesting tale about '84.

Anyone remember Di Canio saluting to the Lazio crowd and everyone saluted back?

                  Here are some pics:

                    ******.

He was linked to a move to Australia and the first thing they mentioned was that stupid salute. Thank god he didn't end up coming.

He is right to an extent. The word 'Ultra' often gets confused with 'Hooligan'. To be an Ultra you may just be in a supporter group which organizes mosaics/tifos etc. Basically a supporter group is called an Ultra group. It's not a hooligan or a firm looking for fights and trouble.

However of course that doesn't stop certain members of these Ultra groups getting caught up in it.
