It can be argued that the '80's consisted of three evolution of 'Pool teams - 81-84, 85-87,87-90.

The common thread throughout however is King - so for mine he is the obvious choice, given the framing of the question.

Ronnie Whelan deserves a mention though too - he was top quality for nearly the whole decade
I had the pleasure of playing against Ronnie Whelan in a pre-season friendly when he was right at the end of his career and seriously on the turps.

It was the major highlight of my less than mediocre footballing career, he couldnt run by that stage, and nor do i think he wished to, but nobody got near him for the hour that he played. His passing was out of this world, control of the ball from foot to neck height, only ever one touch, his second was normally a 20 yard pass. Unfortunately the team he played for werent on the same planet as Ronnie, but i think everybody on the pitch was in awe. It made me realise just how you dont see it all on the telly nor do you always appreciate just how good these players are when youre sitting in the stands. To be standing 10 yards away from him most of the game made me see that he was just a fantastic footballer still, and in his prime deserved to be part of Liverpool folklore.

          Just a great, great player.

Honourable mentions for so many, Digger, Jocky, Souness, Molby, Rushie, but no-one will ever hold a candle to the King, the best Liverpool player ever for me.
