JAR - have we had a better left back?

I agree mate, he gets a bit of stick in the forums but he has been consistanly excellent for us. He has his faults but he is fairly solid and a match winner.

He's class, most of the top clubs would bite our hands off for him. His defending is average, but he more than makes up for it.

Apart from the goals he's destinctly average. We could get a better LB IMO.

That said, in the position he found himself in tonight i can't think of a better player to ping it in.

I still can't get over some of the slating he gets - he's a regular in one of the meanest defences we've had for years - and he's a superb goal threat.

I can't think of one LB I'd choose over him to be honest.

Grosso and Zambrotta would be good - but I'd still have Riise in there.

I have always liked JAR, and i don't think he gets the credit he deserves...He may not be the best defender in the world, but he covers more ground than most other defenders, has a phenominal eye for goal and is incredibly fit (hardly ever injured). Added to that he very rarely picks up bookings, and I think he has only received 2 yellows in his LFC carreer.

Besides that, to be honest his defending is no where near as bad as some people may think. He does like to hoof the ball out sometimes when there are better options, but rather hoof than try be clever and give it to the opposition close to goal.

steve nicol instantly springs to mind. a brilliant player. carra was a better out and out left back during the treble season

I think JAR is a bit too rubbish at marking to be a genuine world class LB and lacking a yard of pace to be a genuine world class winger.

having said that, most teams would have him in their squads if not the starting 11

he can strike a ball though. not many tap ins in his goal collection!

I disagree. IMO a left back should have positional sense but doesnt have to be a great tackler if he can hold up the play and prevent crosses coming in. He has shown over the last few seasons that he can link up well with whoever he plays with, whether that is Kewell, Aurelio or Gonzalez.

Who would you have in his place out of interest?

theres some fickle people on these forums fair play, consistency is the key, both on the pitch and in our opinions i feel :-D
for me, as ive said before, j.a.r is more than good enough to be in our 1st team. I like his commitment and attitude.

I like Riise, always have. He's not the best definsively but he offers so much more going forward.
