It's about time we started taking a few punts on talent in the lower levels in this country.

I mean we could wait for a mediocre Premiership club to sign him, then if he succeeds buy him for £5-10m, or we take a chance and sign him for £2m now.

Billy Whitehurst

Big Billy. Rambo Billy. Billy Tightshirt. All his clubs had a nickname for him, and all his clubs knew what they would get. Ninety minutes of blood, thunder, intimidation and mayhem. Ninety minutes of fouls - some sly, some obvious - occasionally culminating in bookings and banishments. Ninety minutes of a large man playing to his strengths - power, aerial ability and a decent shot - and ignoring his weaknesses.
Signed from the non-Leagues, this former bricklayer took time to raise his game to League standard under the tutelage of Chris Chilton. When he finally delivered on the £2500 investment, Billy rewarded City with goals scored and created. His finest season, the 1984-85 promotion season, bought plenty of scouts to Boothferry Park and eventually in late 1985 Whitehurst signed for Newcastle United to be the latest in a long line of hopefuls for an impossible job - replacement for Malcolm MacDonald. Billy drifted around a few clubs and gave decent service to all before returning to Hull to partner Keith Edwards in the late 80s. A cup tie at Bradford was a memorable postcard to this partnership of brute force and finishing deadliness.
After City his career soon petered out and his natural domain, pub landlord, beckoned. He has occasionally been seen at City matches since (his reception at the December 2002 Boothferry swansong was uproarious) and has reputedly served time at Her Majesty's pleasure for violent offences. He'll always be a City hero, no-one will take that away from Big Billy.
