Until Stevie Finnan starts showing signs of losing his excellent form of the last 3 seasons, talk of his demise are waaaayyy premature.
People seem to be using a calendar to judge the guy.

Fully deserved. Maybe we can save the money on Alves(overpriced) and bring up one of the young lads in the ressies to back up Finnan.

Even if Rafa bought a great RB,Finnan would still be a great squad player.

I`d imagine it`s time to start looking for Finnan`s replacement.We supposedly have money the spend and Finnan can`t play for ever.I`m not looking for his replacement to start tommorrow but by the end of next season he`ll be getting slower against the likes of Ronaldo.His replacement will therefore be allowed one year to settle in before challenging him for his 1st team place.Finnan might fight him off,however he might not.


Plus he may also get injured in the future,something we`ve been blessed not to see yet.

I think the point one or two might be trying to make is it's always seemed as though Rafa constantly needs to won over by Finnan. I think it's a fairly open secret that Benitez didn't rate him initially and he came very close to selling Finnan, but his (mainly) excellent performances have bought him a lot more time.

I do sense Rafa wants attacking full-backs - or laterals - with the defensive solidity being provided by two centre-backs and the two defensive central midfielders.

Alves is top class and I still want us to sign him, but not necessarily at the expense of Finnan. Alves played right wing against Spurs last week and was superb, so he'd also be an option there with Finnan in the side at right back (obv).

It's all about possibilities.

Finnan deserves his new contract. He was **** at the start of the season but happily it seemed to be a blip - he's been fantastic since Christmas.
