The obvious candidates are: United Cup Final '77; Wimbledon Cup Final '88; Arsenal '89; United Cup Final '96. I'm going to leave out reasoning that would take away the Hillsborough or Heysel tragedies, but I will say that the Hillsborough tragedy put that Arsenal result into perspective. I was also in France at the time and suffered the radio commentary of those two games.
United in '77 was undeserved and denied us the treble chance, United in '96 was just a dreadful performance - both teams were bad in an insipid game of football.
For me the worst was Wimbledon, though. An absolute travesty. We were the best team that season by a country mile and should have destroyed Wimbledon. Its a result which still leaves me sick today.
I'm playing all the right notes. Not necessarily in the right order. I'll give you that, sunshine.

71 against arsenal followed by the 77 cup final against the mancs. heysel should not come into the equation as i believe the game should never been played. uefa at its best again.

          brilliant topic this one.

of course off the pitch any result that would have avoided the 2 tragedies would be top of any list.

On the pitch i am too young to remember 77- from a club history point of view it would be lovely to have won the treble and for sir bob to have won the Cup.

funnily enough the players of 77 have talked about being so disappointed with that final but clemence took them for some beers on the way back home and they resolved to win the final in rome. had we won the FA Cup maybe nerves wouldn't have been as galvanised(sp?) to do the business?

for me the 89 game against arsenal is the one. to lose like that is sickening

My boss (gooner) had a charity 80s theme party just on Friday night. all over the wall lots of images and news stories from the decade. right slap bang in the middle was thomas rolling on the floor.

"i put that one up for you". i nearly puked and it wasn't just the beer

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

The 96 souls lost at Hillsborough would be the result I would want to change most

Without a moments hesitation I'd change the result against Arsenal when they stole the league from us at Anfield. I had nightmares for weeks and weeks afterwards. Couldn't believe we'd thrown it away.
yep me to and i would change it if only becaus i stamped on all my liverpool subbuteo players afterwards.

Looking purely at football and away from finals or league title deciding games, how about the second leg of the European Cup semi against Inter in '65. Benfica would've been no pushovers in the final, but it'd have given Shanks the chance to win us our first European Cup, and before Busby managed it with the septics or indeed Stein managed it with Celtic. That'd have been nice.
