    Well said Rafa

RAFA BENITEZ today launched a furious attack on Real Madrid’s former technical director Jorge Valdano after Liverpool’s style of play was criticised in Spain.

Argentinian Valdano, who left Real in 2005, claimed last week Liverpool fans would acclaim ‘sh*t hanging off a stick’ following their semi-final win over Chelsea.

Jose Mourinho was also targeted by Valdano, who is scathing of the tactics over both legs of the European tie.

Benitez was clearly unimpressed by the comments.

“The people at this club who are working to obtain the targets we are achieving deserve respect, a deep respect,” said Benitez.

“I believe that he has shown a lack of respect to the club and the fans and the sacred stage of Anfield. Speaking of “sh*t hanging from a stick” and other unfair comparisons show he has absolutely no knowledge of the historical reality of this organisation in world football.

“I have known Jorge Valdano for more than 20 years since my time at Real Madrid and I do not have the best professional concept of him.

“I believe that he has much to thank to people like Ramon Martinez, Cappa or Giráldez, to mention only some examples, of trainers or sporting directors he’s worked like.

“These are people who have made a bigger contribution.

“It infuriates to me that a person who has the privilege of being able to express himself in the media does not do so with honour and education and does not show, I repeat, the minimum respect to an institution like Liverpool, with it’s success and history.”

Valdano had claimed: “Football is made up of subjective feeling, of suggestion and in that Anfield is unbeatable.

“Put sh** hanging from a stick in the middle of this passionate crazy stadium, and there are people who will tell you it’s a work of art.

“It’s not. It’s sh** hanging from a stick.

“Chelsea and Liverpool are the clearest and most exaggerated example of the way football is going - very intense, very tactical, very physical and very direct.”

      Rafa is overeacting.

It was a truly awful game of football and Valdano is allowed to say so if he wishes.

          Get a grip.

It was a tense game of football both teams were trying to make a CL final. What do you expect for Liverpool to open up like United did to Milan?

Equally, Rafa is allowed to counter what Valdano says.
To be fair to Rafa, Valdano's comments were overstating things also and it is bound to have affected his professional pride having such disrepectful vitriol lobbed at him from so close to home. It's also quite a turnaround from the people who were just recently trying to install him as their head coach.

It's sour grapes and all that.

I think he is referring to the fact that Valdano is a nobody...so he shouldn't be saying these things.

If it was Cruyff saying this, then maybe he would react differently. Someone who accomplished alot in their career, someone whochanged the way we thought about football. Valdano was just a member of a great Argie team. Nothing more.

I think Rafa was also a tad hurt that a fellow Madridista would say such things against one of his own.

While Valdano is entitled to his opinion, I believe it was the specifics of Valdano's comments which have annoyed Rafa. "**** on a stick" is very derogatory and shouldn't have been used, he could easily have said that the standard of football played wasn't the highest; due in part to the high stakes of the prize at the end of the game.

I would have preferred Rafa to also address the issue of our style of play publically - I liked his response but it eqautes to "show me respect" and that's it.

                            Why though?

Nothing wrong with our style of play.

Rafa isn't a Wenger or a Ferguson he is never going to play expansive football but it's a dam sight better than Houllier and he's proven you can win the big competitions with his style.
