Reds Aces Do Their Bit For Charity

REDS ACES DO THEIR BIT FOR CHARITY
    Steve Hunter 10 June 2007

Liverpool aces Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Peter Crouch have joined forces with the rest of the England squad by donating all their international match fees to charity.
The gesture by the team is expected to raise £1 million for good causes, including The Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK over the next four years.

The players set up their own charitable trust known as the Team England Footballers Charity which started in February this year.

I think they get about £1,500ish per win. They still get paid by their clubs when they are not playing or playing for England anyway. So giving away £1,500 when they are getting £70,000 per week is a **** all. Can't believe the papers are making out that all the England players are all saints.

I would have thought they had appearance fees, then win bonuses on top. It's a great gesture, and I'm not knocking it at all, but £1M over 4 years is only £250,000 a season, and I find it hard to believe that an entire squad playing 5 to 10 matches over the course of a year receives only that much between them.

To be fair, if someone like Steven Gerrard came into your local and said to the barman 'get everyone in here a bevvie' then someone would say 'who does he think he is, flash ****' etc where as if he came in and didnt do that he be slated for being a tight ****.

They gave a donation as a club not as individuals. Not sure if that means the players refused to pay or just organised it differently to other teams.

it's still a significant sum of money to give. As for whether they could give more, I'm sure they could but it is an individuals choice.
