    Barry Kewell

Thought he was very poor yesterday. He cut short his holiday to play like that? He might as well have stayed on the beach......

Alot of people are expecting big things from Kewell this season but on last night's showing that expectation is going to be misplaced. For me - last night he lacked the aggression/determination to get beyond his man and hurt the opposition. Every time he tried to run with the ball it was getting cauight under his feet and he kept running into the defender.
There was an occasion in the second half when we had a break on, Kewell had the ball - ran to the half way line - and then stopped He then fed the ball inside and the attack petered out. That summed him up.

I know it's only a friendly but it was chance to build some confidence, skip past the defender a few times and feed balls into the box but he never took the opportunity - and generally didn't look arsed. Sad really because I was hoping for much more from him now that his injuries are supposedly behind him.....

He'll be what he's always been..and in-and-out player. You'd think he'd be up for it this season...playing for a contract.

Another week...another boring thread about Kewell.

People really need to get over it.

I think he will be better in the season he has always needed to play his way into form. Last night he looked tired and in the first half he was on the side with the **** on the pitch and no one managed any sort of dribbling in that area - coincidence maybe but for now I'm giving the benefit of the doubt.

I think people who believe he will return to Leeds form are fantacists but I feel he could do what on the rare occasions he has been fit for us he has done before, namely hold down a wing and offer the team balance. I think he can still be a useful squad member and one preseason game was never going to change my mind.

We have very average wingers and strikers.Bar Babel who will be quality and obviously Nando.Would you swap Reina,Finnan,Agger,Carra,Our 4centre mids for anyone elses around? No chance because they are top class.Other teams and even weaker teams have better players in the other positions.
We have a great core and had a great chance this summer to spend on 4or5 top quality players. We bought 1 and a kid with lots of promise.
Voronin looks like a poors mans Kuyt.Benayoun is not a winger who will get to the byeline and get a cross in.He will come inside more often than not and congest the play.I'm Kewells biggest critic and he is useless now.No pace,no fight and not deserving of wearing our famous number 7 and Voronin the same with number 10.Gerrard cant save us all the time.
Oh the man is a midfield maestro
and his passes are sooo delightful

I agree he didn't play well yesterday, but, to be fair, the incident you quote where he stopped was more than likely because nobody followed him up the pitch. Simply, he had nobody to pass to. Our 2 'strikers' were way behind him and playing as midfielders as usual.
Life is NOT a journey to the grave with the goal of arriving safely in a prettily preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways in a shower of gravel and party shards, thoroughly used, utterly exhausted, and loudly proclaiming: "F*** ME, that was BRILLIANT!"

the problem is very few of our players can get past a defender with skill/trickery (Ronaldo Style) or even blistering pace.
              We come not to play.

Frodo I just looked at the players you have there in the 9nil game.
Barnes,Beardsley,Rush and Aldridge.Class acts.Compare them to some of the overpayed duds we have now and it makes me sad.

I really thought he'd join the squad fit and raring to go after playing in the Asian cup but it hasn't quite worked out that way. I have no expectations of Kewell this season but one thing's for sure, we cannot depend on him to perform.

Our whole left side is terribly weak and may well prove to be our undoing this season.

He looked good for 20-30 mins in the first half then ran out of fuel. He was willing to take people on but I don't think he has the pace anymore to outrun his marker. He still has the technical ability though but winger he isn't anymore, IMO. In that sense that's puzzling that Rafa's sees him as such.

He looks like he is lacking in confidence. He had at least 2 oppurtunities to test the keeper from distance in the 1st half but bottled it and opted for hopeful crosses into the box.

Well i am a strong supporter of his and am biased. I didnt see the game last night but knowing Harry i would not of expected him to go full pelt in a friendly. I will wait for at least 5 serious (PL) games before i decide what to expect from him this year.
Nah. He won't win the Prem. You can quote me on that. - Sarb24

I've never joined in on the Kewell bashing and the "Barry" thing really gets on my tits too. But based on yesterdays game I would start with Babel ahead of Kewell on Saturday, I thought he looked much sharper yesterday and showed a lot of potential.

Sums it up for me, let's hope he's more interested when the season starts proper.

Isn't that the same for most threads?

I'll only get over Kewell if he either; starts playing regularly with passion and confidence, or, leaves the club.

He's got a lot of talent, but for some reason, fails to apply it consistently for us.

Criticism is just in my opinion and I'm more than happy for him to prove his doubters wrong.

No doubt about it, I'd start with Babel ahead of Kewell everygame. At least Babel has pace and likes to try and take defenders on.
