    Gillett's Now An NASCAR Owner

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Ray Evernham completed the sale of his NASCAR team Monday to Montreal Canadiens owner George Gillett Jr., ending nearly six months of negotiations to bring on a partner.

Gillett becomes the majority owner of the team, which will now be called Gillett Evernham Motorsports. Evernham, who won three championships as a crew chief, still has an ownership stake of the team he launched in 2001. But he will concentrate on competition issues going forward and allow Gillett to handle the business-side of racing.

"With the business acumen of the Gillett family and its sports brands, we've greatly expanded our reach," said Evernham, who will keep the title as chief executive officer. "It certainly allows us to capitalize on our strengths and position GEM for long-term success both on and off the track."

Evernham fields three Nextel Cup teams -- one is in partnership with Valvoline -- a Busch Series team and a part-time ARCA team.

In addition to the Canadians, Gillett is a co-owner of the Liverpool Football Club in the English Premier League. His other business interests include the Bell Centre, where the Canadians play, and Gillett Entertainment Group, which produces some 700 sporting and entertainment events in numerous venues throughout Canada and the U.S.

"Racing is in my blood," Gillett said. "It's not often you get to partner with a leader with Ray's reputation, talent and championship legacy."

More and more NASCAR owners are taking on partners or merging with existing teams to remain competitive in one of the ultra-expensive sport of racing.

Jack Roush opened the season by merging his organization with Boston Red Sox owner John Henry to form Roush Fenway Racing.

More recently, land developer Bobby Ginn merged his fledgling team with Dale Earnhardt Inc. And Robert Yates Racing last week partnered with open-wheel powerhouse Newman/Haas/Lanigan.

Is it wrong of me to be feeling miffed that his attention is elsewhere?

      Yeah yeah...I know he's a businessman and all that ****e, but, as a dyed-in-the-wool supporter, I can't understand flirting with other teams/sports/whatever.

Maybe I'm misguided and totally naive but I want his full attention on us - not to mention the contents of his bank account.

I feel the same but Im sure there will be nothing to worry about. Remember we are co-owned so we will still be in one of the owners best interests.

I fully expect the car to be used as an advertising board for us at some point. From a business point of view, its a free win-win situation.

Anyone remember that Newcastle United sponsored Lister Storm that done the GT championship a few years back??

I know what your saying but it appears his partner will be the man for this venture. I suspect this venture is something he has always wanted to do.

LFC on the other hand is a smart business move. We have huge upside if managed properly over the next 10-20 years. I wouldnt be surprised if he sees us as a cash cow. Don't get me wrong, he will fall completely in love with us but the money making potential and leverage ownership in LFC will give him post new stadium will allow him to own more risky ventures.

Out of interest, is it me or is Gillett taking a more back seat role in running the club compared to Hicks? Hicks has been pretty vocal lately, Gillett conspicous by his silence, which is quite a surprise considering Gillett was the one who brought Hicks on board and seemed to be itching to speak to the media at the time of teh takeover.

Cheers for posting that. First time I've seen that.

To be honest I don't really see what something like that will accomplish. I mean was Newcastle's profile boosted by that to any great extent? I'm not convinced

I remember Dunk on KT going on about how much Newcastle were going to profit from being feautred in Goal! and how it should have been us etc, but I have my doubts about that as well.

Alright I admit, stuffing it on a car in a series that not alot of people watch (as far as im aware) is not a particularly great business venture, but i am sure that it generate some revenue for the club wether it was from some kids on the continent or elswhere wondering who newcastle are (brand awareness) or though business ventures insitigated via the sponsorship of said car.

If its done on a NASCAR however, I believe its win-win for Gilette and for us, NASCAR is the biggest racing series in the states (correct me if im wrong on this) and having millions of people seeing the Liverbird & LFC zooming round for 500 laps is going to generate brand awareness. Kids will start to associate us with the drivers & cars and want to know what its about. The kudos of having a shirt that sponsors a car will be a good thing also.

Not to mention the American companies that will want to associate with us should the cars that we potentially sponsor win races.

I think Hicks has more interest in us then Gillett,

Hicks loves all sports from what i can see and has passion, Gillett is more of how much money can i make
