    Our fullbacks

what a poor poor excuse for a footballer Riise is

Seriously apart from a superb goal every 30 games or so what exactly does he offer us.

I'll tell you, sweet. ****. all!

He cant pass to save himself, he cant run with the ball, he cant cross, all he can do is hold possession, turn around and play it of his opponent for a throw in. He is not good enough!

In Rafa's system we need 2 fullbacks like Arsenal have, they bomb forward, they overlap, creating space, and they have pace.

Having Riise, and to a lesser extent Finnan will not win us the league. They are both too slow at moving the ball. While Finnan is sound as a pound defensively, and can put a decent ball in....its far to infrequent for my liking, he is far to defense minded.

If only we had of got Dani Alves when we had the chance

I was going to post something like this, our FBs are back up FBs only, and our back 4 as at today is woefully short, 3 of them are no more than back up squad players and if we had Agger back and overlapping FBs, then we would be a different proposition altogether, we don't pin the opposition back far enough, they are always on top of us before we realise we have a problem, then it's all hands to the deck for some mad zonal marking defending.

That's a fair assessment and I don't think Insua is that type of 'bombing' player either. I just can't see Rafa playing with that type of player. Riise, while having many technical limitations, probably offers what Rafa likes in a player 'tactically'.

At Valencia he had an old warhorse at left back (I can't remember his name) and he was hardly a flying full back. People should realize that apart from Arsenal and probably Barca, which teams play with such attacking freedom ? Not many. Even man utd play with conservative full backs (if you take Brown and Neville - Yes Evra can be classed as a bombing attacking FB but they currently play with O'Shea).

Carboni is who you are thinking of, and yes he was a slow fullback, technically however he was of very good quality. Curro Torres was their RB, and he did get forward.

I dont know who exactly i would target for the left (i was one of the few that was calling for Rafa to sign Bale). Taiwo has looked quality each time ive seen him, so he may be an option.

Finnan has hardly been "sound as pound" this season. Arbeloa should take his place.

And Riise, yeah, he can **** off back to Norway. Horrible footballer.

Riise was poor yesterday but in his defence he does at least try to overlap his LM and give us some width.
As for Finnan, im starting to think that his best days are behind him.

I have stood by and defended Riise for years but even I cannot defend his recent performances. That said, there have been plenty of players who have been poor recently, but as Harvey said JAR just doesn't seem to offer anything to the team nowadays.

Time to give Insua a chance? Probably not (hopefully he will play against Cardiff) but I can't wait for Arbeloa to get that LB spot back!

Still, Finnan is a good player, just suffering the effects of aging a little, he was involved in our first goal quite well I think. Riise is just ****e altogether and has been for some time. It's sad to say.

I agree with HB, if Villa are going to stump up the cash, sell him. If we can get 15 million for both riise and carson we should be able to get a world class winger/wing back.

15 million for both. you know rafa would go spend it on a centre back and the obligatory defensive midfielder.

I'd love two world class fullbacks. They'd transform our team.

why is it a dig? we've cried out for width and pace since rafa arrived and every transfer window we've spent the money elsewhere.

I think Lucas is an amazing prospect but did we really need to have 5 central midfielders in our first team squad.

As for a centre back, its obvious we're short there BUT imo we're short elsewhere on the pitch too. From what I've seen of Rafa he'll spend the money on centre back cover before even considering width, pace and flair.

If you get the impression I'm having a dig its because I'm increasingly pissed of with crap like riise, voronin, kuyt and momo being given pitch time.
