Have we got room in the team for Xabi, Gerrard and Mascherano?

I don't think we have, I think the 2 defensive midfielders tactic has really hampered us this season and we lose the cohesion and the link between attack and midfield. The result is a lot of hoofing.

OK, Rafa will rotate them you say. Well 17 million for a holding midfielder who doesn't play every game. Plus you have to factor in the 1.5-2 million we've already paid for him.
Is it good value? I'm not convinced.

Of course we have! 1 injury to one of those 3 changes everything...

At the end of the day, we all know how much Rafa loves Xabi, and if Masher wants to get into the team he will have to improve his passing..

I see your concern over the price but IMO if we want to be challenging for top trophies for seasons to come, look no further than Masher

So let's assume, we don't take him. We let momo go. We need another CM. Who else could we get that was guaranteed to adapt to the PL and is of a comparable level?

Let's not be cutting off our noises to spite our faces.

El Jefecito also offers possibilities as he is a true holding midfielder, none of the others are.

Poulsen or Keita in my opinion. Keita is a more intelligent version of Momo. He has the athletic ability, great technical ability and great intelligence. He scored a screamer against Real a few weeks ago

Mascherano is the best holding midfielder in the world so you can't get anyone better.

No problem to play Alonso, Gerrard and Mascherano at the same time in a 4-2-3-1.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

But they play for Sevilla ffs. Del Nido will make sure we pay more for them than we would have to pay for Masch.

That ****ty formation is what brings us such classics as the blackburn game and the Portsmouth game.

2 defensive midfielders = 0-0. It's the most benign negative tactic in world football and won't win you owt.

TBH where we are at today, value for money should be a lesser concern, we need the best.

In the long term, 17m over say 5 years is nothing. Christ, he's only 23, he could easily be here 10 years. 1.7m a year. Worth it?

Don't you think with Agger coming back, if Masher plays it allows Gerrard/Alonso/Lucas to go forward more?

And in fairness our wing play was **** for those 2 games, part of the problem

Depends who the 2 are. TBH it's only if we played El Jefecito and Momo that you could really call them DMs. When playing with El Jefecito Xabi is not a DM. He showed that against Derby.

No, it allows one of the defensive midfielders to play higher up the pitch. Sometimes Xabi will attack and the other times Masch.

You would also more or less play with four strikers even if three of them plays behind the main striker.
