Moores sold the club because he felt he was not the man to take the club forward.
To me that means he was not rich enough.

But based on that you`d like to guess the Yanks next move in the transfer market.
You said "We don`t have money to burn",we might have.
We didn`t buy Heinze last yr(But we must have had the money) and may sell Momo and Riise in January. We may have loads to burn.

True, I am assuming that we wont be able to compete with Man U until the stadium is built.

So it is IMHO quite possible that there is a player out there good enough for it to be better to spend the money in other ways.
I dont think it is a fair comparision when people suggest buy someone else instead of Masch because he is already playing for us. It is not as simple as it sounds. Rafa will have to identify a player who would be good enough, the club must be willing to sell the player and their valuation must match Rafa's, the player must be willing to come to the club(unlike lets say Malouda). He will then have to acclimatise to the country, gel in with the players and adjust to the league and there is a chance this might not happen. Most importantly he will have to deliver on the pitch.
Since the same cant be said of Mascher as other replacements we would buy,
assume that Masch is our player(SG, XA and LL being the other CMs) and Barca comes with an offer of £17m. Would you accept it or not. Accepting would mean 17m more to the transfer kitty and we will have to buy another ball winning midfielder.

I´m just saying Rafa might have a plan that he feels is better then paying 17m for Mascherano.

Not disagreeing with that. None of us know what Rafa plans to do except that he said that he wanted to keep Mascherano.
Anyway, this thread was to discuss what we thought of spending £17m on Mascherano wasnt it.

Yes and I doubt that many of us are really in any position to from a proper opinion on that.

Having said that, I want Mascherano to stay. I´m just not gonna pass judgment on the club if they decide not to pay up.

If we don't sign up Masher, then it'll be the biggest f*k up since allowing Anelka to slip through. This guy is an absolute tiger of a player, who'll always be in and around the opossing teams attack trying to disrupt their game, which he does by winning the ball on countless occassions. As someone said earlier, he can man-mark, and boy did he do that in Athens where he had Kaka in his pocket!

Sign him up NOW FFS !!!!!

As for Mascher. I think Rafa should be given the benefit of the doubt. We have not let Mascher go. And if we will we have not seen how good the team is going to be next season.

And also, the midfielders Rafa has brought in have all adapted very quickly. Xabi, Momo and Mascher all slotted right in. And if Maschers replacement will be brought in in Jan he will have 5 months to prepare and should be ready for next season.

So my conclusion is that to say it is a bad plan to not buy Mascher for 17m is making to many assumptions and not having enough faith in Rafa.
I think though that a lot of people worry that Rafa wants Mascher but the possibility of us getting to keep him recedes if we don't sign him soon and the continental sides such as Barcelona start offering him deals. A lot of this concern comes from Maestros hints the other day that Rafa and Mascher were less than happy with the pace at which a deal was being done. I tend to think that Maestros information is straight up and from a good source but you never know how much they are inferring things rather than knowing.

I have to say that I'm unsure about whether Mascher is worth £17m and at the start of the season when his form was poor I would have been against it - I thought he was unable to handle teams targetting him as the route out of defence at PL pace. It appears that it was partly his lack of confidence and partly the low confidence of the team as a whole which gave this impression. So the question is now for me the one that Les originally raised of whether we think £17m is too much for a holding player.

I would pay whatever to get the final pieces to a PL winning team but I'm not sure that a holding player is that missing piece.

I really dont disagree with any of that.

If we don't sign Mascher then we would need to sign up someone else playing in that position.

That means that new player will need time to adapt to Rafa's system, probably six months plus.

Mascher's position is a key position and playing in a new player could mean another year without a PL title.

Is saving a few millions worth that?
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Mascherano is still finishing the season with us.

What I mean is the new player will have the six months to get up to speed.
