    Carra on Pepe

Reina ‘is among world’s top three’

Nov 17 2007 by Nick Smith, Liverpool Daily Post

LIVERPOOL defender Jamie Carragher insists Jose Reina is one of the top three goalkeepers in the world.

Reina’s domination of the Anfield goalkeeping slot has forced England’s Scott Carson out on loan to three different clubs since he joined Liver-pool and he has been given the go-ahead to make his move to Aston Villa permanent.

Rafael Benitez will look to boost his January transfer kitty with £8-10million for Carson, after acknow-ledging he will not oust Reina from his position as number one.

And Carragher’s view of Reina underlines why his manager is right to seek a potential record sum for his understudy.

The Spanish stopper has again established himself as one of the top keepers in the country this year, keeping seven clean sheets in Liverpool’s 12 Premier League games.

After winning the Barclays Golden Glove award for the second season running last term, Reina’s

reputation continues to soar, and that has been continued bad news for Carson.

“Pepe is the best goalkeeper I have ever played with,” said Carragher. “I’ve always thought Pepe is a great goalkeeper. I have been at Liver-pool a long time now and he is the best kee-per I’ve played with.

“He has beaten some records at this club already and that is testimony to what a top class goalkeeper he is. For me he is in the top three in the world. I think Cech, Buffon and Pepe are the best around. You can put them in any order you want, there is not much difference between them.

“It is great as a defender to have a goalkeeper you can trust and who you know you can rely on. I think if we were nervous about the goalkeeper and worried that any mistake you made would end up as a goal, then it would affect your play.”

Meanwhile, Steven Gerrard has set the record straight after reports that the Liverpool captain, during an England Press conference, suggested he would prefer to win honours at international than club level.

Gerrard said: “All I was trying to say was to say was when I am with England, England are most important but when I am with Liverpool, Liverpool are most important. I am desperate for success with both Liverpool and England.”

FA Youth Cup holders Liverpool will start their defence on the road and in the third round they will face the winner of next Wednesday’s second round match between Wycombe Wanderers and Dag-enham & Redbridge.
