Jermaine Pennant

Was on LFC official site just now and was looking at our squad list when I saw his name. I had completely forgotten that he played for us. Am I the only one? Surely that isn't a good sign for the lad. He's not been missed at all.

To be honest the team is playing well and when that happens it is always easy to forget/ignore the contribution that players who are out can make. I don't believe Pennant is a world beater but, when fit, he does give us a very different option which can be very useful in some games. IMO he is a valuable squad member but is unlikely to challenge for a regular first team berth unless he improves.

No goal threat therefore for me he ain't good enough, even if he has improved over the past 12 months.

If money is an issue we should sell him in January and, hopefully with some funds from elsewhere, buy a better wide-player.

I'm sure Birmingham or any number of mid-to-lower-table sides would buy him.

He another player like Riise and Sissoko for example that is still here because Rafa hasn't been able to sign up better players yet.

A squad player that won't start in the big games anymore if he isn't improving, just as you said.

I suppose the same could be said of Agger and Alonso, recently they haven't been missed.

I hadn't forgotten him - in fact, only last night at the match I was thinking "If Jermaine Pennant ever had half as bad a game as Ryan Babel is having then he'd be absolutely slaughtered in the morning"

Mind you, Ryan is still a young lad and scores more goals than Pennant, so I don't mean this to be a dig at him, just at the way some people watch a game once they've decided they don't like a player. Bloke behind me spent most of the game saying how "Gerrard has done ****-all for 6 months now, he's ****e". Someone pointed out the free-kick and general performance on Saturday to which he said "yeah, but that's only against crap opposition, he never does it against decent teams".

I'm as guilty as anyone. I never did see what anyone saw in Baros.

Anyway, nice to see some consistency on here for a change. Players can still be slagged off even when they aren't playing.

I think we miss pennant in certian games, he would have torn the geordies appart, but he wouldn't have been much use v Porto, he's very much a horses for courses player, will be good in certain situations but not gonna be playing every week.

I'm not sure that is fair. Peoples opinions on both Pennant and Babel are divided however because he has less experience people give Babel more leeway. I don't think Babel had a particularly bad game last night actually and the difference between him and Pennant has been that Babel offers himself as an option in the box and we need all of our front four to do that.

There is a similarity in the two in that neither consistantly take the right oprion, especially when they cut inside.

I thought he was diabolical last night, but he scored a good goal on Saturday, has a great shot on him, and looks an exciting prospect. Everyone's entitled to the odd bad game. All I was highlighting is that Pennant gets slated on here for far less, and seemingly even when he isn't playing.

Pennant is nothing more than mediocre, and hopefully won't get too much of a look in. His injury has given us the opportunity to see just how much better an 'intelligent' player is on the right as opposed to a winger. Yossi has made more of a contribution in a handful of games than Pennant made in two years.
