i've been meaning to say something about the managers situation in the league for a while now, so excuse my ramblings but here we go:
There's a few articles going round at the moment, talking about how many different clubs have changed managers recently, and got me thinking what ridiculous demands are placed on managers and how quite conceivably Rafa could have been out on his arse like the rest in his first season if not for the Euro cup and also an understanding board and fan base.
There are only 3 managers who've managed a prem side longer than Rafa, which in itself is quite astonishing:
Ferguson 21yrs
Wenger 11yrs
Moyes 5yrs
It can be argued all three are good at their jobs, Wenger and Fergusson, countless trophies between them and league titles, Moyes while he hasn't won anything with Everton (like it or not) has certainly built them up into a credible side no longer dicing with relegation every season and now in uefa cup spots, but these things only happen with time (usually).
It's a funny state of affairs when Rafa who's only been here 3yrs is among the top four longest serving prem managers. Coppell has been at his club longer but the same demands aren't placed on championship managers so we'll leave him for the moment.
So what would have happened if we hadn't had our run in the champs league, would he have been kicked out after his first season, a 5th place finish and no champs league football the following season or even a trophy. In my opinion he wouldn't have, I think generally speaking we have intelligent fans who could see Rafa was trying to build something, and that you can't base a managers ability on only a few games or even on just one season. We did have a board in place whom I think would have been happy to keep rafa on, but it does make me wonder if we still have that same attitude at the top of the club.
this was originally going to be a piece about how I hope the current regime don't sack rafa or force him out, but it seems after reading articles today things are sorted and we aren't going to change managers on whim. Before all of this you would probably have argued that Rafa, Moyes Wenger and Fergusson had some of the safest jobs in the league, and imo it's not just a coincidence that they are the longest serving managers.
Obiously there will always be anomalies like mourinho he won the league in only one season, or managers who haven't been forced out of a club because they keep a steady position in the league while not really going forwards (although there's not much evidence of this in the league at the moment)
but anyway that was pretty much all i wanted to say, feel free to discuss
