Rejuvenated Kewell in line for new contract

Rejuvenated Kewell in line for new contract
    December 03, 2007

IN a remarkable statement of faith, Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has backed Socceroos star Harry Kewell to continue his career at Liverpool, despite the injury-ravaged forward's contract expiring at the end of this season.

Amid widespread expectation that Kewell would struggle to justify a new Anfield deal as he continues yet another comeback from injury, Benitez moved to back the Sydney-born forward, who would be free to discuss a deal with a new club outside the UK from January 1.

In comments that suggest Kewell has every prospect of earning a new contract if he stays fit, the Liverpool manager said: "He wants to stay in England and I believe he wants to remain here.

"I have been really impressed with his work in training and he has done well in the bits of games he has played.

"He is nearly ready for a full 90 minutes and I think his future will be at this club."

Kewell himself has asked Benitez that any discussions about a new deal should wait until he is starting regularly for Liverpool, as the coach has sought to reintroduce him to the team gently with a series of cameos off the bench.

In the Champions League in midweek, Kewell played almost half an hour and set up Liverpool's second goal for Fernando Torres in the 4-1 thumping of Porto.

The left side remains a problem area for Liverpool in Kewell's absence, which goes a long way to explaining Benitez's faith in a player on much better terms with the Liverpool medical room than the Anfield pitch in recent times.

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

I promised myself never to get excited by Kewell again, for the fear of jinxing him. There's been so many false dawns with him, I love him as a player and I'm sad luck hasn't been on his side here. I've started to treat every game he plays as his last and I'm just happy whenever he's available for selection.

No pressure, Harry, just keep working hard (not too hard) and do your stuff.

Anything else would be madness IMO.

          Yeah I agree.

He has a hell of a lot to offer us when fit but you never know how long that will be. Even if he plays out the rest of the season completely fit, he could very well be crocked again next season. Pay as you play is the way forward

            Agree 100%

If he was to be offered a 'pay as you play' contract, would he accept it though?

If the above is true then there isn't any rush. Kewell want to play for us and won't discuss a move to another club until Rafa have made his decision.

How about he pays us to play? Given that he's reputed to have made 20+ million over the course of his contract with us

I'll say it again, i believe he could be the star wide player we crave that can create something from nothing to lead us to the title, Gerrard really likes playing with him which is very obvious watching the games. Like the rest of you guys i just hope the lad can stay fit now.

I would be happy if we offered a guaranteed lower salary or a pay as you play deal. If we can get him on affordable terms he has the potential to offer more than any free transfer we are likely to get. He might want the security of a non pay as you lay deal and I would consider it as him leaving for another team would be a real blow IMO.

It is a relatively low risk gamble if we balance the deal correctly.

A fully fit Kewell is still one of the best around, IF he can stay fit.

Pay as you play would be no risk at all or even a 2 year contract on reduced pay.

as someone mentioned gerrard loves playing with him and I'd be over the moon if he signed a new deal. I don't think its a coincidence that sg has returned to form with harry back in the lineup. Torres also seems to love playing with him.

I wouldn't mind a deal like that either

If he has a cracking season i doubt we'll be able to get him on a pay-per-play based deal. But i do think he feels that he owes liverpool and this is where he wants to play
