“But I want to score as many goals as I can”…

After reading this article I have a feeling our Captain could be aiming audaciously for a target of 20 goals in the prem this year. Bold or ridiculous some of you may say, but I wouldn’t put it past him, the guy has such a drive and hunger about him on the pitch recently. He’s setting up goals for fun - his free kicks in the box are back to their dangerous best and he’s hitting the early season form he showed playing in the position we all know is his best.

But I want to score as many goals as I can. I set myself a target before the start of each season, which I keep to myself! But things are going along nice and smoothly at the moment.”

The manager says before the game who takes the penalties. He swaps and changes, I don’t know how he decides at all. I think I am scoring a few because Xabi Alonso is injured. I am trying to get as many as I can before he gets back!”

He’s scored 5 after 11 games already (with 24 to go), and let’s be honest here, he is our chief penalty taker and he’s put them away with ease lately. I’d prefer it if Rafa gave Stevie the job of taking penalties instead of Alonso as Stevie is settled in this role and fast becoming ‘Mr. Reliable’ from the spot.

Gerrard said: “You don’t compare yourself to other people. What I do compare is Liverpool to Arsenal and Liverpool to Chelsea.

If Fabregas and Lampard score more goals than me but we finish higher than them in the table I certainly will not be complaining. Goals are important but not as important as points.”

He’s certainly saying the right things nowadays and these two paragraphs above got me smiling.

Your too good to be true, can't take the ball off you you got a heavenly touch, you pass like Sounness to rush. And when we're pissed in the bars we thank the Lord that your ours

If he wants to score as many as he can, he should relieve himself on corner duty and get his ass in the box.

I disagree his corners are landing in the right spots at the moment and we're scoring from them.

I hear what your saying, but his corners haven't been half bad of late...2 assists v Porto and 1 v Newcastle attest to that.

I'd definitely like to see him share corner duties, but if he keeps up the standard of delivery he's reached in the last few games I'll be happy.

His corners have been decent for the last few matches but what about the last few years?

Even if he has finally stopped his trying for the 'perfect' corner malarky which results in him hitting the first defender 80% of the time, we have better options. and Gerrard attacking them in the box would be a very potent weapon, I have NO doubt about that.

Yeah but that was then this is now. Now it aint broken so there's no need to fix it is there..? Incidentally I always thought Xabi was going to take corners anone know what's happened to that idea?
Could it possibly be the fact that he always overhits his free kicks into the box?

I'd much prefer to see Gerrard either attacking the ball in the area (he's tall and a good header of the ball) or alternatively loitering on the edge of the area, waiting for knock-downs....

So then your happy for Alonso and Kewell to take the corners?
You have a point, remember his cracking goal scored against Arse (Kop end) when he was a youngster? (about 2000-01 or so) - that time it was just outside the 18yard box where he'd been loitering.

Or the fact he hasn't been playing

Oh and mate, don't let 2 /3 games fool you. Just because you tape over the crack doesn't mean it aint broken anymore. I'd put money on more of the usual crap in the weeks to come.

I'd have him attacking the ball from the edge if it was my shout. The odd time I'd have him lurking outside.

we have a number of decent corner takers. Xabi, Aurelio, Pennant, Babel, Kewell, even Benayoun all of whom wouldn't offer much in or around the area from set pieces.

disagree with kewell think he's a good attacker of corners, but of course being one of the few lefties it's a problem, because he will take them quite often
