So it looks like it's confirmed that they talked to another manager about taking over the job, and that it could easily have happened if a) the public spat hadn't been dampened and/or b) we didn't get past Marseille.

What a sorry state of affairs.

For ****s sake, some of you lot are ridiculous.

You criticise the club for NOT revealing what's going on and now Hicks has responded you're still having a go

As for the revelations - I see a hell of a difference between what they did (cover bases) and how the press have spun it.

What a pair of utterly clueless ******s with the ****ing gall to insinuate that they done it because Rafa might leave for Real Madrid.

Why is it so much more unlikely that Rafa HASN'T put feelers out to Spain and Italy. Are you really that gullible?

We don't know what went on with DIC but Bill (hicks) and Ben (Gillett) have run sporting clubs before seemed to have the financial clout and won us all over with there first press conference.

Since then they have turned out to be 2 clueless cunts who are ruining our club.

I don't blame Moores I blame the yanks.

Or maybe Hicks is spinning it. Why do you believe one thing and not the other?

I know the press lie routinely but so have Hicks and Gillett.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

It shouldnt have been done in the first place. It you are going to replace a manager then do it, but to 'line up replacements just in case' smacks of mismanagement and incompetence.

Hicks has confirmed with this that Rafa is on borrowed time - which with the state of the press will only fan the flames....

Oh and it's bollocks about insurance policy IMO, if he's worried about Rafa leaving then get on the phone and speak to him!

Why is Klinsmann a no mark by the way? Yes, he has little experience, but he has more than Kenny had when he too kover. Christ, he took a very poor German team to third in the world cup, and has just gone to Germany's biggest club.

I don't think he's a bad manager. Not a manager i'd like to see in charge of us, but not the inept fool he's being portrayed as on here.

If (and i still don't think it's true) Rafa leaves, i still think Mourinho would be the ideal choice. Yes, he's a cnut of the highest order, but the players would respect him, and he is well equipped to deal with egos and no one could deny his motivational skills.

EXCLUSIVE by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

TOM Hicks and George Gillett held a secret meeting with Jurgen Klinsmann to line him up as the next manager of Liverpool FC.

Hicks today insisted the talks would not have resulted in the immediate dismissal of Rafael Benitez and that Klinsmann was only "an insurance policy."

He told the ECHO: "We attempted to negotiate an option, as an insurance policy, to have him become manager if Rafa left for Real Madrid or other clubs that were rumoured in the UK press.

"Or in case our communication spiralled out of control for some reason."

                                The ECHO can also reveal:

                                * Had Liverpool crashed out of the Champions League the club’s owners would have tried to replace Benitez.

                                * A deal was almost agreed for Dubai International Capital to buy a minority share in the club in the autumn, only for talks to collapse over the valuation of the club.

                                * Hicks is hopeful for a financial restructure and that plans for the new stadium will be released by the end of this week.

For the full story, see today's Liverpool Echo.

                                Insurance policy?

They expect me to believe that?!
