1. There is far too much anti-american sentiment on these boards at the moment. The owners ave funded the purchase of Fernando Torres, are funding the building of a new stadium and are essentially ensuring that we do not fall further behind in the financial aspects of club football. Im not exactly sure what people think that these man have done wrong. Were they acting with folly to seek out a replacement for rafa when it looked to all that he might leave the club? Lest we forget, it was the spaniard that began publicising the fallout between him and the owners, and that decision continues to backfire on him. It was a massive error of judgement on his part and only time will tell whether or not he will pay the ultimate price for that infamous press conference. Hicks' commentary from yesterday may have been a bit misguided but essentially he was totally honest about what had happened and should not be lynched for giving us the truth. Not the liverpool way certainly, but did benitez himself act in the liverpool way when he threw his toys out of the pram? No.
2. Despite all this hullabaloo, it seems to be the press that is putting benitez on the brink, rather than the owners themselves. they have now backed rafa 100% and put their differences behind them. Whether this holds to be true in the long term, only time will tell, but until something happens, nothing anyone says elsewhere should be considered to be the gospel truth. Some of the stories coming out in the press are ridiculous, but bull**** stories sell newspapers and thus they are going to milk it for as long as they can. Every sensationalist story HAS to be treated with a pinch of salt until the actual facts are made known.
3. Even if none of this had happened, Rafa's position would most likely be in doubt come the summer anyway. Another tepid performance in the title race have left many disillusioned with his ability to form a proper challenge for No19 and rightly so. To hell with gross spend and net spend and comparisons with the other top4 - we should be doing better and perhaps a change of manager would not be the worst thing in the world. Some want to give him more time but there has been little evidence to show that he can improve us in the league. Granted, his recent comments in relation to wanting to stay at the club are exactly what a fan wants to hear from the manager, exactly. He is a gent who loves the club and I wish he had what is takes to challenge for the league, I really do. But so far, it seems he does not. He has done a fantastic job in relation to re-structuring the youth academy and has brought in some top players (emphasize some) etc and perhaps another season with the man at the helm would not be the worst thing in the world. Its a tough decision.
4. There is no better manager for the Champions League though and this should be borne in mind by the owners as the financial rewards for success in that competition are huge. However, I have my doubts as to whether continued success in the CL at the expense of the PL will appease the fans for much longer if at all.
We are at a crossroads, and only time will tell if we have taken the right path. However, i still think that this is a positive time to be an LFC supporter and the doom and gloom of recent days is only a blip on our continued rise back to the top of world football.
Nobody said it was going to be easy.
