Now thats how a captain should speak!

Explaining that the players' must take responsibility for the team's drop in form

""I think this is just an excuse - as it was at the start of the season to point to assistant boss Pako Ayesteran leaving when we were poor," he said.

"The last nine or 10 games haven't been good enough.

"We are all aware of what is going on but all we can do as players is concentrate on doing it on the pitch.

"Anything that goes on off it is nothing to do with us. I know some people say what happens off the pitch affects players - but it doesn't affect me. Why should it?

"I am paid to play. Your wages are still coming in, you are still playing for Liverpool, so I don't know why it should affect players.

"If I was in a foreign country and there was something like this going on I don't think I would care or be bothered about it.

"We know we need to improve over the next few weeks. As players we have to take responsibility to sort things out on the pitch.

"We had a few bad results at the start of the season and everyone was talking. I said then you have to be strong mentally to play for Liverpool and that things happen off the pitch but you can't let it affect you.

"Rafa takes a bit of criticism for the teams he picks but we haven't noticed a change in him. It has just kept on going as normal - we train and get on with it."
    "

Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

    * After Tommy Lawrence had let in a fluke goal between his legs

Are you saying Steve should not be Captain? or doesn't speak like one?
Nah. He won't win the Prem. You can quote me on that. - Sarb24

Carra has a way about him. No doubt.

Stevie is the Captain because he would probably have left us if he wasn't.

A economical and political decision. Xabi is Rafa's Captain on the pitch and Carra talks like our Captain off it.

              IMO.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

But you are also inferring that you think Gerrard doesnt conduct himself well in interviews.

Personally I disagree with that, I think both Gerrard and Carragher bit give very honest interviews, more honest than most other club captains anyway. Gerrard is normally the first person to admit when himself or the team are underperfoming and has never once put any blame on the manager.

I know what ou're saying, but Xabi is more the brains on the pitch, he isnt vocal or forceful enough to act as capitan.

Stevie does come out with some clangers tho in interviews- he aint the brightest or most press-savvy.

I think carra and steve are completely different in the way they lead, carra is an old school type of capt, puts everything on the line, screams and shouts and drags players through games...also he seams alot more comfortable and honest infront of camera.

stevie is a more modern capt, perfect for the business, very marketable, although he doesnt shout, just his presence and ability has everyones respect and also he can dominate a game and turn loses/draws into victorys...I do beleive though he is not as confortable in front of the camera and has preprepared comments/answers written by his advisors.

In my opinion we have two capts and which balance the team out, which we should be very lucky for.
Just look at the face: it's vacant, with a hint of sadness. Like a drunk who's lost a bet.

Personally think he is too honest and would make mistakes in a crisis like this, which he has if you read his whole interview. Would of said the same about Gerrard up until about 18 months ago. Since then he has been far better than i expected as far as the media goes.

His comments after the game yesterday were spot on IMO, however i would bet he said exactly what Rafa told him to.

good post and I agree. However it is Carra's honesty that would see him undone in pressure situations as far as the media is concerned. If you read what he said in full in this interview he has given the press a few angles to twist if they so desire.

The role of the captain is greater than shouting at players on the pitch.

I am sure our captain is delighted to have an 'eloquent', honest and vocal lieutenant in Carra.

There is room for both these guys.

(Note to self: get off the fence more!)
