Liverpool fans see Tom Hicks mucking up their way of life

By GIL LeBRETON, Star-Telegram Staff Writer

When he stood before the Liverpool home fans for the first time 12 months ago, Tom Hicks was showered with cheers and appreciation.

Little did Hicks know, it seems, that after that glorious day at Anfield, he was expected to drop from sight, leaving behind as his only visible presence his fat American checkbook.

This is the British way, and the learning curve is enormous.

British soccer isn't sport as much as it is passion, family and religion, all rolled into one.

"There is a big percentage of fans," Hicks acknowledged Tuesday, "for whom the football club is truly their life."

Hicks and partner George Gillett, owner of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens, purchased the British Premier League's Liverpool club in February, 2007, for a reported $432.9 million.

As John Thompson wrote in the Liverpool Echo that day, "What walked into Anfield yesterday looked, sounded, smelled and felt like very rich, very warm, very talented and very decent family people who love sport to their core and who see the chance to become -- in George Gillett's words -- custodians, rather than owners, of something unique and special which is a rare privilege for them."

Almost 12 months later, during Monday's 2-2 draw with Aston Villa, the same fans howled for Hicks' and Gillett's heads, calling them "liars."

Carrying banners -- like the one that read, "If it ain't broke, don't Hicks it" -- and chanting through much of the night, the Liverpool faithful called upon the North American owners to sell, sell, sell.

According to the Liverpool Daily Post, "Such was the animosity towards the Americans at Monday night's game against Villa, it is hard to see -- due to security reasons -- how they can ever appear again in the Anfield directors' box."

As someone close to the situation described it, the Liverpool tabloids have created a feeding frenzy designed for Hicks to take the blame for the club's current disappointing, fifth-place performance.

Liverpool has an old, inadequate stadium, which Hicks and Gillett have pledged to replace. And when original architectural estimates came in $200 million more than expected, and the new owners sought additional financing, the newspapers fed fans' hysteria with stories of broken promises and massive debt.

There hasn't been anything seen in Britain like it since... well, since Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner Malcolm Glazer bought the storied Manchester United club in 2005.

In England, if I'm reading this correctly, Americans -- especially rich Texans -- are expected to pay cash for sports franchises and to purchase new stadiums with their American Express cards. To do anything less, British soccer fans feel, is to compromise the player purchasing power of the local football club.

In the United States, of course, what Hicks is doing is not at all unusual.

Jerry Jones borrowed liberally to purchase the Cowboys. San Francisco Giants owners built a waterfront stadium with private funds, then still had $126 million to spend on Barry Zito.

Owners going into debt and still signing free agents, we realize here in the States, are not mutually exclusive options.

The latest Liverpool headlines had a group of Dubai investors waiting in the wings for Hicks and Gillett to desperately sell.

    Hicks has flatly denied it.

In fact, when asked Tuesday how much of the recent tabloid speculation was true, Hicks replied, "None of it."

Hicks admits that he didn't help things, though, when a disagreement last November with Liverpool manager (coach) Rafael "Rafa" Benitez turned into a public spat.

Benitez thought Hicks should be spending more money to buy players. Hicks more or less told Rafa to do a better job of coaching the ones he's got.

Fans sided with Benitez. They were inflamed further when Hicks admitted talking to Germany's Jurgen Klinsmann about the possibility of coaching Liverpool, should Benitez resign -- as he's threatened to do often, it seems, over the past 2 1/2 years.

Hicks called the talks with Klinsmann "an insurance policy." The Liverpool fans have made Rafa a martyr over the incident.

Hicks wouldn't discuss the latest rumors Tuesday, fearing that his words would only be turned around by the British press.

"It will all work itself out on Thursday," he told the Star-Telegram. "There are no problems."

A source close to the Liverpool situation said that it likely means that there will be an announcement Thursday that Hicks has secured financing for the revised new stadium. Hicks had asked both proposed architects to go back to their drafting boards and submit revised designs using more "value-engineering."

The new stadium -- the original plans were dazzling -- will allow an additional 30,000 Liverpool fans to see their beloved team.

The additional revenues would be used to pay off the stadium debt, as well as allow the club to compete with its Premier League rivals.

It isn't broken, in other words, but he is trying to "Hicks" his soccer team.

Somehow, that's been getting unfairly lost in the translation.

He somewhat conveniently leaves out certain details, such as G&H lying about placing debt on the club, lying about supporting the manager in the transfer market, ****ing up on the stadium front, and Hicks' shooting his mouth off, and contributing to the media fiasco surrounding the club.

Any comments would be appreciated. Also, as you can see, the author conveniently placed his e-mail and phone number at the end of the article.

    "There are no problems."

Ha! Rich, but a liar and dumb to boot. I trust many of you, far more able than I am, will take up Gil LeBreton's invite.

Please make the point that LFC is not a fekkin 'franchise'.

            That is an excellent article.

The one thing I don't agree with is the stadium debt servicing though. If you look at the way that Arsenal funded their stadium it was already paying for itself whilst they were paying for it - their franchising model was genius from a financial point of view really, apart from the fact that it shat all over their fans and will do for ever. But then we already knew that that was how we were going to pay for the new stadium anyway, didn't we? The models will all be the same - invest so you can cream the fans until kingdom come.

Just sent the following email to this clueless 'journalist':

              Gil,

              Regarding your recent article headlined 'Liverpool fans see Tom Hicks mucking up their way of life', from the Star Telegram;

I am not sure what journalistic idiosyncrasies are required to become a successful journalist in the USA, but here in the UK, there are two general methods, either of which tend to build a path of success within the industry.

The first is the 'simply make it up' tactic. This is usually associated with what we would refer to as the 'gutter press' and 'newspapers' which employ journalists that regularly opt for this method are derided and treated as nothing more than a joke.

The second method is that of well researched, balanced and accurate journalism. Having read your aforementioned article, i suspect you may well require a definition before you can comprehend what well researched, balanced and accurate journalism actually is, but I have neither the time nor the inclination to provide you with one.

What I will do however, is point out to you that your highly biased, pro-Hicks article neglected to mention several key points.

Firstly, having completed their purchase of Liverpool Football Club, Hicks and Gillett made a promise that no debt would be transferred onto the books of Liverpool Football Club. This was a lie.

They also promised that they would offer their full backing to manager Rafael Benitez. This month, the plan was to complete the permanent purchase of Javier Mascherano, a key player that Liverpool currently have on loan. However, this plan seems to have dissolved as our 'esteemed' owners are apparently incapable or unwilling to provide the necessary funds. How is that for support? Furthermore, unless you can clarify how offering someone's job to someone else while no vacancy actually exists (and then stupidly revealing this to the world's media) equates to 'support', then Hicks and Gillett are once again shown to have lied. For your further information (adding to the somewhat minimal amount of accuracies you seem to currently possess), Rafael Benitez has never once 'threatened' to resign. He has indicated where improvements are necessary and consistenty emphasised how much he loves being the manager of Liverpool Football Club and has every desire to remain in his position long term. So the notion that Hicks and Gillett are 'supporting' him as they emphatically promised, is laughable.

The bumbling pair then revealed some highly exciting and ambitious plans & designs for the new stadium they were promising to build. A few short weeks later, it appeared that they had neglected to consider how much this was likely to cost, and more importantly, how they would fund this. Another lie. Or an example of sheer foolishness, at best.

Now it has become clear that the original loan the pair took is causing them problems of a sufficient size that now require the loan to be re-financed, before the first repayment has even been paid. So call it lies or incompetence - either way, it is yet another embarrassing setback from the pair who arrogantly and brashly waved dollar bills in front of rolling TV cameras, in order to apparently highlight their ambition for the club and the means they apparently had which would turn the ambitions into reality.

So Mr LeBreton, as I have pointed out, you appear to be somewhat ignorant of the facts. Perhaps some more detailed research would be a useful option for future articles.

"Only in America" they often say, when describing the unique nature of the USA. Well I agree.

We won't stand for it in England, but only in America could two bumbling fools be allowed to purchase and ruin sports institutions that are loved and respected the world over.

And only in America would they allow someone to write such an ill-educated article about it.

              Good day.

                Hi Mr. LeBreton,

I have just finished your article, "Liverpool fans see Hicks mucking up their way of life", and am quite disgruntled at the way you portray us Liverpool fans.

At the moment our football club is being run by two liars, we dont want them in charge, hence severe protests at our recent games and it will continue for the next few at least. You seem to defend Hicks to a great degree which I can understand considering you cannot see the total mess that both himself and Mr.Gillett have brought on OUR club.

I do agree with what you say about some fans being happy when the pair arrived, to be honest I wasn't overly satisfied but decided to give them time, as did many other fans like me. It's been a year now and so far all we have gotten from these two is a bunch of lies.

                * When they bought us they said no debt will be saddled on the club. Pending an announcement tomorrow(Thursday) this seems like it will actually happen, one way or another.
                * They said Rafa(Rafa Benitez, our manager and hero to a lot of us) would be backed in the transfer windows, granted they have done last summer but as far as I am aware, none of the money used on transfers came from their pockets.
                * They have brought out a design for our new stadium and now it seems it has been retracted and we are awaiting a new design. Why produce one, get the fans excited, and then pull out of it?
                * They have publicly said, and continue to say, that Rafa is safe and has their full support. Now since then, Mr.Hicks has had a public argument with him about money he gets to spend, totally unacceptable when you consider the money that we need to revamp our playing squad.
                * But most of all, they have spoken to another manager, Jurgen Klinsmann, as an "insurance policy" in case Rafa leaves because he has threatened to do so in the past. Now, he has never, ever, threatened to quit, ever. And secondly on this point, they are thinking of, or thought of, replacing our greatest manager for a long time with a manager who managed no more than 25 games in his career so far.

Now, at this stage, we Liverpool fans are totally fed up with how Hicks and Gillett have made our club the laughing stock of english football for the past few months and would like to see them leave our club ASAP. There are many Liverpool fansites that have done polls on this, I can tell you from what I've seen, that every single one had over 90% wanting the pair out. We want new owners, we want them soon. You may have come across the term "the Liverpool way" in your research. This is the traditions of our club, how we do things with a whole lot of dignity and respect for everyone involved with the club and Hicks and Gillett have totally destroyed that in the past couple of months with their public spats with Rafa and the comments about Klinsmann.

So Mr. leBronton, thank you for taking the time to read this email if you have done, I hope you know understand a bit more of how us Liverpool fans are feeling at the moment.

                Regards
                Dan Smyth

Mmmmm...Rafa may have indicated his position to Jed and Jethro, but it hasn't been repeated in the public domain. I think he has 'indicated' to the clowns that he may 'exercise his options if he's 'not backed sufficiently' but they would immediately lose £5-6m, and a lot more support.

Two fantastic letters chaps, much respect.

Leveraged buy-outs are perfectly normal and an efficient way of using capital though, I think the issue here is that we've been misled by Gillet and Hicks re. debt on the club.

I guaran-****ing-tee that their argument will be 'we bought the club without deb t on the club, but the stadium is quite sensibly being used as the 'asset' to back the loan needed to build it. Splitting hairs/semantics I'm sure you agree, but if they hadn't said 'no debt on club' originally I doubt anyone would care (once they understood WHY).

I've been on holidays before without spending a penny - I put the debt on my house by remortgaging

I read this article yesterday and immediately sent the writer an email explaining how Liverpool supporters feel and how he'd misunderstood what our anger was about and what our CULTURE is about.

                              That article really annoyed me.
