Pennant is definitely good enough to be in our squad, but as others have said he lacks the determination, drive, directness and goal threat to really be a top winger.

I was optimistic that he would add these elements to his game given time, but he seems content to stay at his current level, which admitedly is decent enough, but not enough to justify his inclusion week in week out.
A humble guy with healthy desire.

I thought Pennant was quite poor last night, I think it took him about 10 minutes to actually touch the ball when he came on as Finnan was the one bombing forward and providing the width.

When Pennant was a young player and in the U21's he was taking people on and beating them for fun and looked like a really exciting player, the type of player I wished we would sign but I just don't see that in him any more. He should now be in the prime of his career but for a player how had so much potential he has just never delivered any of it for me

He isn't good enough for us and those were hardly assists last night.

I think we have forgotten what its like to have a bit of quality out wide.
Twin boys - now arriving late August 2008.

Its gonna be Fernando and Gerrard if I get my way!

He needs to go outside the defender and get to the byeline more often. Most of the time last night he kept coming into a crowded midfield or looking to cross before he had tried to go past the opposition.

Like a few players in the squad he seems to lack that extra bit of belief in himself out on the pitch. He's a squad player at best for me, but I do wonder what a really good man manager would be able to get out of him.

not good enough to be anything other than a squad player.

has played in the epl long enough for us to be certain he never will be good enough

He also looks like he has a ridiculous "wings" tattoo on his back....and I don't mean he has a fondness to McCartney's band.

[QUOTE=Marky;958473]If he could cross properly he'd be a goodin, a very goodin.

I thought he played well tonight when he came on, he always takes up good positions but his crosses are a bit ****ty. Just floated in, they need to be whipped and bent in with pace.

I had this discussion with a mate last night, his crosses are far better than Finnan's because they are wiped in with pace rather than Finnan's lofted straight crosses. He's got a good delivery but thats it, he can hardly beat a world class defender on pace or trickery. He's not good enough to be in the 1st team.

He's not good enough. I'd sell in the summer, buy a 1st choice winger and keep Yossi as backup.

I think his time may be limited alright. seems to have only been a bit part player since his return from Injury.

Bit of a revamp in the wide areas this summer probably.

I'd agree with you. Barring astriker, a right winger is the next position we need to strengthen, and Yossi would be the perfect backup/rotation man for him, who can also play other roles

In my opinion he seems to do better as an impact player coming off the bench, maybe because defenders are tired he becomes more effective, I'd be disappointed if he was our first choice winger next season
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Problem with pennant is he's quite limited in the respect of you always know what you're going to get. He doesn't have anything extra up his sleeve you might say. Probably a "second premiership tier" 1st team regular. Newcastle or dare I say it -perfect for everton.

I actually think that crossing is the best part of his game.

His short passing though. That is usually terrible.

And he is one of our best corner takers.

He was the difference last night.

I do feel sorry for Babel though. Crossing certainly isn't his strong point and I feel he deserves a run up front.

Pennant is a good impact player. If we finish up doing a 4231 he's not good enough to start. Coming on against tired legs though he is worth a go as he proved against inter.

Who would you rather have as backup - Yossi who can assist AND score or Pennant who can only assist?
