    Why did.............

Why did Rafa not use Skrtel beside Hyypia against Boro? While Hyypia has the positional sense, Skrtel has the pace to make a good pairing. Instead he went with Arbeloa, who in my opinion is a poor centre back. I'm sure it cant of done Skrtel's confidence any good when a full back is put ahead of you in your position. Especially when the last time Arbeloa played as a centre back he was shocking.

Skrtel had a shaky game against Havvant and he seems to be judged on that one game alone. It must be very hard to play in your first full game for your new club, especially at Anfield. He played well in the games since and is starting to settle in.

I think he will become one of Liverpools best defenders in a relatively short space of time. I think he has everything that you need as a centre back.
On another note, I still see no improvement in Aurelio, he is poor in defence, goes forward well but rarely has an end product, and he still amazes me when he is allowed anywhere near a free kick!

I just don't see what Rafa sees in him. Give me Riise any day. O.K he has had a poor season but I still think he is a better overall player than Aurelio. Another player that I think is over rated is Lucas. He has had some OK games for Liverpool, but again at Boro he was anonymous. He is young, and he is slowly improving, but I would not start him ahead of Alonso, Pennant etc.

Ok we won against Boro, but we gave some soft goals away. If it wasnt for Torres quality finishing it could easily of been another draw or worse.

Because Skrtel had been injured and was judged unfit to last 90 minutes is the simple answer.

Seems like you've been listening to the commentators too much mate.

Skrtel was passed as 100% fit. Even a 50% fit Skrtel would be better than a 100% fit Arbeloa at centre back. I watched the match on Setanta and never heard any reference to Skrtel so what are you talking about?

Who passed him 100% fit because the club said he wasn't?

The cock on Setanta at half time said pretty much the same thing as you about Skrtel and it was only corrected in the second half by the commentator who said he wasn't fit to last the 90 minutes.

You talk about confidence, do you think a game playing half fit would be good for that?

Any win in the Prem a few days after beating Inter Milan in the Champions Legaue is a good win.

I think Arbeloa played a good game. He covered a lot of ground in Hyypia's zone as all of the central defenders do when they play with Sami.

It isn't that easy to play with Hyypia anymore, Carra is an excellent proof of that.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

He wasn't 100% fit and had Carra or Agger been available he wouldn't have been in the squad - don't think he was ever going to be risked unless of an emergency

Arboloa didn't do much wrong to be fair - that said, will feel a whole lot more comfortable when one of our natural CBs return

I didnt listen to the half time analysis. Went to make a cuppa
If he was fit enough for the bench he should be fit enough to play. I just dont think Arbeloa is a good option in centre half.

The problem is though that without Carra the overall organisation of the defense went to pot. Arbeloa's individual performance is not all that relevant if he communicates badly with others and the defensive unit suffers. Obviously this is likely to be a problem with Skrtel too but sometime the way some players cover others is more predictable than others which could allow someone like Hyypia and Reina to exert more control over the defense as a whole.

Agree with ye on that. I just prefer when we start with our best available eleven in their best positions.

Not at the risk of outting them out long term if it's only 1 x game that we should be able to win without them though. I think we have had our fair share of problems this year bringing people back that little bit early - I think Rafa was right to do what he did and I am sure we would have only seen Skrtel on if we were under serious pressure in the second half and up against it. Imagine if he had played whilst not being fit & we lost - the headlines would have been a combination of Skrtel not being good enough and Rafa not making the right decision and not knowing his players physical condition well enough

Now he should be 100% when he plays
