    Justice96 E-Petition-Government Response

I signed this petition some months back as im sure many of us did which was:

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Demand Justice for Hillsborough and put pressure on the Sun Newspaper to Print a Full Apology on their Front page Condeming Their Lies Bringing Justice for the 96

Anyway i just received the governments response this morning, and thought people who havent had one or seen it would like to.

    Justice96 - epetition reply26 February 2008

    We received a petition asking:

"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Demand Justice for Hillsborough and put pressure on the Sun Newspaper to Print a Full Apology on their Front page Condeming Their Lies Bringing Justice for the 96."

    Details of Petition:

"A Petition For Justice for the 96 Who lost their Lives at the Hillsborough football Disaster and to bring pressure on the sun newspaper to apologise for the lies and hatred they have shown towards the people of liverpool and bring JUSTICE for the 96."

    Read the petition
    Petitions home page
Read the Government's responseThe events at Hillsborough on April 15th, 1989 were one of the worst tragedies in the post-war history of Britain, and one which united the whole country in mourning.

As we approach the 20th anniversary of the tragedy next year, our thoughts remain with the families and friends of the deceased, and we remain absolutely committed to ensuring that sort of tragedy is never repeated.

All of us remember The Sun's coverage of the tragedy at the time under its then editor Mr MacKenzie. It was right that The Sun apologized for that coverage in 2004, calling it the worst mistake in the history of the paper.

Nevertheless, we fully appreciate the strong emotions that are still aroused over this issue, and which form the basis of your petition.

However, we cannot accept your particular proposal.

We believe that it is fit and right that individual readers are free to complain to editors about the content of their newspapers, and that they also have the right to ask for their complaints to be investigated by the independent Press Complaints Commission.

However, we also believe that the principle that the press is free from government control is fundamental to how our democracy works, and as such, we do not believe the government should ever instruct a newspaper either what it must publish, or on what page of the newspaper.

We are sorry if you find this reply disappointing, but we hope you appreciate the fundamental principle at stake.

Is it me or was the whole e petition thing just a waste of time? Does anybody know if one of these petitions has actually resulted in any action being taken?
Winning an argument on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win you are still a retard!

Boycotting that rag is enough IMO. These journos are entitled to their opinion even though it's a sensible issue. The Boycott serves its purpose well, IMO.

Seriously though, this is the football forum, and a very serious topic too, inappropriate off-topic "joke" and subsequent related comments removed.

No more nonsense in this thread, and that's not a request.......

I've yet to see one that works, but I see plenty of the snooty whitehall replies though. They've all got that aftertaste of -

"We don't really give a **** what you think, we'll do things our way thanks."

I personally think the boycott is the best we can get.

Does anybody recall exactly what this 'apology' entailed in 2004? I remember some sort of wishy wahsy apology but not much if memory serves me right.

We cannot make the government force them into making an apology also. That's their prerogative and we should stick to boycotting this rag.

The boycott will hit them harder than a forced apology anyway, and apology would be forgotten by everyone else by the end of the week, wereas the lack of ££ will hurt them more.

Unless a story constitutes a breach of national security then the government should stay well out the way.

                          Their response makes perfect sense.

If I remember rightly it was a half arsed apology - opposite an article about Rooney I think - that basically said "ok, we were wrong, but you guys are so full of **** that you really should have let it lie years ago". It kind of felt like "we're sorry but it was still your fault - now buy our paper again and stop being such morbid ****s".
                              Really?
