    Rafa Furious Over Mascherano

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is furious with Javier Mascherano's selection for Argentina's friendly in Egypt next week.

Mascherano's departure for what Benitez considers an unnecessary friendly against the African Cup of Nations' champions, four days before the Merseyside derby with Everton and a week ahead of the Champions League quarter-final first leg at Arsenal, is therefore a major concern for the Liverpool manager.

"I am really, really happy that Mascherano must go to Egypt to play a friendly," said a sarcastic Benitez, who also loses the midfielder to Argentina's Olympic squad in August as one of their three over-23 players. "Things like that you just cannot understand. There is nothing you can do. The rules are the rules and the players must go.

"You can't speak to the coach. You can say 'Be careful' but they are thinking about themselves.

"They need to check the players to see if they can manage with the team, so it will be very difficult. It's the same problem for all the top sides. Normally the best players are in the top sides and they are playing Champions League or playing for the title."

****ing friendlies, can barely accept normal compettive international matches, but this is a joke. Can we not withdraw him or claim he has a knock?

****s sake. Can't they ban international football?

Is Tevez also due to travel?

Nah, Tevez is suspended for the next Argie game so he's not travelling

Isn't there some sort of rule that states if you pull out of an international game midweek then you are considered "unavailable" for the following weekend's fixture (unless an agreement is reached with the National country's FA)

Or am I making this up?

To have international friendlies at this stage of the season is absolutely ridiculous

Relax, we'll manage. At least Rafa has the integrity to send his players and not make some excuse for them not to travel.

Yeah, you are pretty much correct. If a player turns down the national team or a club refuses him to go, the national federation can block him from playing competitive club football for an amount of time I can't remember. This happened to Makalele a while back, where he wanted to retire from international football, but the french manager treathened to block him from playing for chelsea if he did - ****ed up that is...

I like international football, but ffs get rid of friendlies, or if you don't at least make the international calender so that it does not interfere with national comp...

So Tevez got sent off in his last game for the Argies, does he miss only internationals? Perhaps Masch can get 'sent off' too?
