This is the player that we should sign and play before lucas any given sunday. The fact that Benitez is looking for another midfielder says that Alonso is probably leaving.

By ALAN BIGGS - More by this author »

Rafael Benitez has launched a £12million move to sign Manchester City's Michael Johnson in the summer.

It is the Liverpool boss's third attempt to take the 20-year-old midfielder to Anfield and evidence that the Spaniard is intent on building up his squad, despite the shadow of power politics that is threatening his long-term tenure.

Liverpool renewed their approach to City in the past few days and negotiations are at an advanced stage, with Johnson's heart set on a switch that was first mooted about a year ago.

Benitez is committed to capturing Johnson whether or not Sven Goran Eriksson succeeds in tempting Peter Crouch to Eastlands in a swap proposal that was set up to take place in January.

The exchange was put on ice when Johnson underwent surgery on a groin injury and Portsmouth have since mounted an attempt to lever Crouch from Eriksson's grasp.

But Benitez wants Johnson anyway and will offer either straight cash or players in part-exchange.

Johnson was the subject of a bid by Benitez last summer, but the deal was blocked by Eriksson.

The player remains desperate to move to Anfield, despite having three years left on his City contract.

City will offer Johnson an improved contract, but the youngster is determined that he will be playing Champions League football next season.

This lad will be a very good player.

my insight is that he's clearly lightweight and gets pushed off the ball far too easily. my insight is that he lacks pace, flair, the ability to consistently beat his man and i don't care if a youtube video of some mickey mouse league proves otherwise.

having said all of that i still hope he comes good
interesting post. An insult followed by completely ignoring the questions asked.

The fact is the majority of people on here will go on as if every player that wears the red is great until it becomes glaringly obvious to even the most biast that they are infact not very good at all.

As far as lucas goes, not only is he average, I don't see much in his game that would leave me to believe he will ever be anything but average

*waits for insults from the donks that can't handle anything but a positive opinion*

Maybe Rafa is planning to play Lucas in the Gerrard position next season and that is why we are linked with another central midfielder, that would of course mean that Xabi is off.

            -----------Masch-----Johnson----
            -----Gerrard------Lucas----Babel---

Then he would play in the same free box to box position as he did for Gremio.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Ah, Nic with his usual negative opinion about our players Very expected and very unfair.

He plays in a position he never played before in a new league and he don't play that much and that means that it will be more difficult for him to learn his new position.

He's been asked to play a very restricted role to aid his development. Anyone who saw him when he was at Gremio/when he plays for Brazil U19-U20s knows he has a LOT more to his game. When he's given a more expansive role it will provide the perfect platform for him to showcase ALL of his qualities.

I can understand where Nic is coming from but his opinion is based on the fact that he's only seen 1/4 of Lucas's game.

Maybe so, but as you say, all I am saying is what I am seeing.. I would be very happy if it is only 1/4 of his ability and there is a lot more to come

I can also understand that. I'm football mad and watch a lot of games. I forget sometimes that everyone don't watch as many games as me.

There is a reason to why more or less everyone that have seen him play for Gremio and Brazil U20 say that he will be a world class player in a few years time.

Very few players in his position reach their full potential until they are 24+ years old. Gerrard for example didn't play as the superstar he is now until he was 23, 24 years old, the same can be sad about Kaka.
