Yes, we did pay over the odds for Pennant and Crouch. Not Kuyt though.

£10m for him, although he's improved of late, was daylight robbery. £10m for 15 league goals in two seasons.
As for Pennant, FFS, what was he worth !? £ 2m ???!!

pennant was slightly over priced. he's a 5 mill player and we paid 6.7. crouch and kuyt were both spot on for me. kuyt was brilliant in holland. if he'd have had better luck in front of goal (how many times has the bloke hit the frame of the goal?) then he'd be well worth it.
houllier is to blame for cisse and he convinced parry he was the new henry...

All this 'paying over the odds' talk is bollocks in my opinion. A player's value is directly proportional to what he brings to the team. One player can bring much needed strength in depth without being a first choice player, and at the same time wins us trophies by direct correlation. It's a team game in the end.
A player's worth is directly related to how much a club(s) is(are) willing to pay for him, and it may depend on the financial reality as a whole which is a changing ecosystem. Spending money as whole and not winning anything and by the same token not making a profit based on revenues etc ... can be classified as bad business.
Take the Beckham deal for example. He is far more worth on a marketing point of view, compared to what he's worth as a player, as he's past his best. That's not to say that the club which bought him didn't get a great deal for him, based on the package which he brings with him.
All of this to say that it's not a straightforward issue at all. If a manager thinks a player will bring value to the team, then he buys him in accordance with his transfer budget and priorities. All the rest is pure fantasy imo.

I think it depends what you mean - you are judging using hindsight which in some ways is fair enough. However when we bought him we payed a fee similar to that which Spurs were offering which makes it market value. Even if he hasn't worked out as we would have hoped. I don't think anyone else was willing to spend what we did on either Crouch or Pennant (although I would say the former has proved himself worth the investment).Originally posted by ShaggyAlonso View Post

I didn't mean that, simply wanting to point out that it was not as simple as that. Carrick cost £18 m ffs and he's not even in the england squad. As a direct result United won the league last season and are about to win it this time around.Originally posted by Operation View PostTrue, for 8 million, apart from a tricky winger, we bought into 'brand pennant', and all of the off pitch benefits that that brings.
Beckham is an exception. He's far worth for his off field shenanigans than for what he's capable of as a playing entity.
As for Pennant, he's been a good buy, despite what most of you would say. He's been nowhere near a catastrophe in his 3 years he's been with us. Was always a good option for our right hand side. Yes, he didn't set the world alight, but FFS, he cost £ 7m pounds. That's the price you pay for buying english players.

7mill is chicken feed in todays market. Pennant was worth that. We buy what we can afford. I worry Hicks would buy what we couldn't afford, with the club in debt for the next century. Hopefully with Parry still here he wont let Hicks do this.

Yeah fair point, I am using the benefit of hindsight. Probably a fair market value at the time but he’s clearly not and never will be a £10m player.Originally posted by dww View PostI think it depends what you mean - you are judging using hindsight which in some ways is fair enough. Spurs paid about the same for Berbatov at a similar time, which is pretty galling. Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

Doesn't mean anything mate. It's the price Spurs were prepared to pay for him and nothing else. Berbatov isn't a prolific goalscorer either (I don't know the stats) and he's not set the world alight as regards his goalscoring records either! Yes, he's technically good, but I doubt he would be as worthwhile as Dirk in our team. He doesn't half put the same amount of work for a start and can't play in as much positions.Originally posted by ShaggyAlonso View PostYeah fair point, I am using the benefit of hindsight. We'll have to disagree. 7 million for a player with 'issues' who plays for a team that has just been relegated and who's only really good game that year was against us was OTT imo.Originally posted by REDrascal View Post
