It's a really weird one. Kuyt tends to do a lot better against the bigger sides where his work ethic and defensive ability are far more appreciated than against more inferior teams, where you need someone who will provide a dangerous outlet/finish.
Kuyt gets loads of praise against the likes of Arsenal because the game and the role he is required to play suits him, but then you play him up-front against Blackburn and he squanders numerous excellent opportunities and his lack of technical refinery is on demonstration. He has definitely saved his Liverpool career over the last few months for me, though, and I'm happy to keep hold of him unless a really attractive bid comes in.
By the way, something that annoys me is when people say "anyone can work hard, that is the bare minimum". Well, that's all well and good, but it doesn't really work out like that, does it? I would find it hard to name a player I have seen play for the club who works as much as Kuyt, whether that is the "bare minimum" or not.

I'd agree largely about the "anyone can work hard bit" but the thing is that the likes of Rooney and Ronaldo work hard and are genuinely class players. On the other hand I think that Kuyt doesn't get enough praise for the intelligent way he moves and puts the effort in. A lot of players don't work as hard because they just don't understand what to do if the ball is unlikely to come to them or the opposition have it. Kuyt's movement in attack and defense is good.
I think there is two large problems with Kuyt that may not be solved: one is pace and the other is with his second touch. When he has room it is fine as it gets it out of his body but against teams who pay attention to him (often if he is the one up this happens) or against better teams it costs him/us possession. I kind of feel that he is a confidence player in front of goal and that we might see him improve next season and if he got say 10 league goals that could make a massive difference to us."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

Spot on as usual. He's a clever player. I think his touch can be a problem due to him being tired from literally running non-stop the whole game. I mentioned it earlier in the thread, remember his debut? I think if we sign a quality RW in the summer (rumours of Valencia don't fill me with joy, however, I'd prefer Kuyt) Dirk could channel his energy into 20/30 mins and we would see his touch improve.

I haven't seen a lot of Valencia but when I have I have been impressed. I can completely see why people have reservations but I like pacy players with decent touch and in the second half of the season he has seemed to get a decent number of goals and assists (and he is young). I worry he would be another Pennant and el matador who has seen him more seems not to rate him at all.
On the other hand I think this summer we could see us try to add pacey and mobility to the team in order to be more effective in the PL and for a decent value I think he would add that and give a very different alternative to Kuyt. It would be a risk but I genuinely can't think of a wide player anywhere who I would be 100% convinced by and is available (excluding the hugely unlikely Ronaldinho)."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

We bid for Ronaldo and ManUre quadrupled our bid.....................Originally posted by DJS View PostJust to give an example (and i know there arent many RWs like Ronaldo) but compare the output of kuyt to that of Ronaldo and ask yourselves if we'd be a better team with someone of Ronaldo's capabilities, or someone of Kuyt's.

Very good. quadruple nothing = nothing!
Therefore if we buy nothing, Manchester will buy nothing x 4 = nothing
Dont tell this lame joke to Tom Hicks, he's likely to take it seriously.
Nah. He won't win the Prem. You can quote me on that. - Sarb24
