    New Day, New Dawn

I felt angry and disappointed on the way home last night from the pub. We were terrible in the first half and throughout the second - couldn't keep hold of the ball, misdirected passes, terrible first touch and control. We didn't seem to have the same movement, accuracy and ball speed that Chelsea had. And we were the ones who had to score.

We had some debate as to what our tactics were - do we keep it tight for 60 minutes, dont conceed and then go at them in the last half hour? Do we try for an early goal and settle ourselves? Even when Drogba scored the first, it still didn't really change things for us - we still had to score.

Then we really had to chase the game. I thought Rafa had made some terrible mistakes with the substitutions. With the pitch the way it was, I thought our best chance was to play Gerrard out right (as he had been largely ineffective in the middle, dropping very deep), babel left and bring Crouch on alongside Torres. With 10 minutes to go we should have been relentlessly bombarding the Chelsea box with corsses for Crouch.

I mentioned on another thread how on the radio a caller said how Rafa had 3 strikers in the squad and finished the game with none of the 3 playing. Now I know people will come on and say that Babels goal justified his introduction - but why bring somebody on who has only been playing as a winger to play as a lone striker? It baffled me. And as for Pennant - don't get me started!

Couldnt have been very different with the Referee, Hyppia was fouled in the box - there was definate contact. First goal possibly offside? But as Carra said before the game - these are the little pieces of luck that win you games.

But it's a new day. Part of me is glad I wont have to go through a Utd / Liverpool final - I dont think I could cope. We've done wonders in the Champions League. But Rafa still baffles me.

There's 2 main positives that i can draw. Firstly, it's saved me the best part of 2 grand. And secondly, elimination can only speed up the removal of Hicks.

If you want to stretch it to a third, at least we aint gonna be involved in the carnage of Moscow. Give me Rome or Madrid anyday.

I have to admit when Torres got the goal and levelled the tie I thought we were there. Chelsea looked rattled and we needed to step up a gear. But we didn't. It was the ideal time to introduce Crouch or Babel or both. The thing is with Rafa he plans his changes before the game and does not alter this bar injuries. This is how he operates so I can't fault him for it as it pays off most times. I am gutted today but at least we gave it a go. It was inevitable that JAR's OG would settle the tie.
        Dare we believe

I was massively disappointed last night, but looking back on it now sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and say it just wasn't meant to be. We gave it our all and it wasn't enough. We were right in the game in the second half and could have won it, but once it went to extra-time it was anyone's game. The penalty ****ed us and yeah we could have/should have had a pen, and of course Sami wouldn't even have been on the pitch if Skittles hadn't gone off, but those are the fine margins which decide matches and they went against us. Over 2 games and extra time all that separated the teams was one goal.

We've had a great run in the CL, not just this year but over recent years, so I can't complain. I'm proud of the lads today. Roll on next season!

Hopefully we can steal a march on our rivals for next season now. There's nothing left to play for so the preparation for August starts here.

I'd be tempted to give the likes of Torres and others who are playing in the Euro's this summer a break since they won't get much of one before next season.

If the likes of Insua and Nemeth are going to make it, there's no better time to throw them into the action and see what they can do. Maybe a chance to experiment with other things too, like Babel up front and Lucas in the Gerrard role.

Despite our defeat last night im still proud. Chelsea had all the luck. Own goal, penalty, and no penalty for us when Hyypia was fouled. Thats football just have to accept it. Can't get to the final every year

We are lucky to have Rafa. We are one of europe's CURRENT elite clubs because Rafa has took us to 3 semi finals and 2 finals in the last 4 seasons. Thats mighty impressive and i dont believe any other manager could have managed that.

Ofcourse we are dissapointed to only finish 4th in the league BUT you have to understand that football has changed and Englands top 4 are the richest and most powerful clubs in the world. The fact that we continue to compete with the rest of them is reassuring. Competing with the other top 3 is not easy by any means and we are doing just fine.

Iv had a lot of good memories this season. We were unlucky against Chelsea but smashing Marseille, Porto, Inter Milan and Arsenal is really impressive and was alot of fun. We cant get to the final every year. Happens, get over it and lets look forward to next season where hopefully we will make more progress

Great post, and a great call there. I was thinking the same thing myself. Agree with all the points

                  Exactly.

All we need is new owners coming in and we will be all set to challenge. Fergie will leave the Mancs soon so it's about time we started a dynasty and got some real continuity going.

I really think this club can go places if we can get the Dubai lot in.

Plus we are closer to the top than any other season since Rafa took over in points difference
