    Insua

Provided we don't buy in that area, really can't see why he shouldn't be our first choice there next season.

I like Aurelio, but he's a bit brittle.

I would agree. Thought he looked strong and confident on the ball. Nice to see him getting the opportunity.

I'd like to see him phased in, making him first choice after one game is perhaps putting a little too much pressure on the lad.

Aurelio would be my first choice as things stand now, and as he's made of glass you know Inusa would be guaranteed at least 20 starts as his backup. Arbeloa, and even Agger when he recovers can cover there too.

The potential arrival of Degen confuses me a little, if we assume he replaces Finnan, and Riise's also gone, will we buy another, genuine quality RB as well and use Arbeloa as cover on the left while Insua finds his feet, or buy someone else to play left and have Arbeloa/Degen/Carra as our right options?

Not too impressed with Insua's waistline or speed at the moment. He needs to lose some baby fat to help him get a little quicker. But he's been setting the reserves league on fire (as has Nemeth) so he more than deserves his chance in the big time.
        One tit for another.

If you have been watching him over the last year or so for the reserves, you would know that he is far quicker than most the players (not including of course Gerrard, Babel, Skrtel, Torres) in our squad and certainly most our current defenders.

Its way too early to be talking about him being first choice left back.

Maybe if Riise goes, Aurelio, Insua with Carragher and Arbeloa as back up could be the left back options. That wouldn't be a bad thing really because money could be spent elsewhere in the squad.

Having said that, I would like to see a quality left back signed in the summer to really shake up that side of the pitch.

Its gonna be Fernando and Gerrard if I get my way!

I haven't seen much of him except the two games he's started in the prem. I've been reading about him but obviously I can only go on the games I've seen him play in so far.

He may be quicker than most of our defenders, but he's nowhere near Clichy, Evra or Cole yet so we still need a solution on that side while he settles in. I saw him struggle a bit more than I would have liked but like I said he needs time - nobody's denying him that.

I think suggesting using him as a first choice left back is a little premature, he's only played 3 games! We'll sign a first choice left back (hopefully) and he'll play in cup games and make a few sub appearance then we will be in a better position to judge

I'd be surprised if we bought a left back. Aurelio would be first choice for me and with Arbeloa and Insua I think there's enough quality and strength in depth there.

Based on yesterday he looked pretty slow compared to Vassell, in addition I can't remember him winning a header. Not a patch on Evra or Cole at the moment.

Looked pretty good going forward but I would have liked to see him give width instead of trying to push inside when he hadn't dot the ball
I make no apologies, this is me

Almost everyone is slow compared to Vassell. That's why we defend in zones.

BTW Evra is 26, Cole 27. It's unfair to compare a 19 year old with players with that experience.

He looked a lot better a prospect than Evra did during his first year and Cole has been a shadow of the player he was at Arsenal.

He actually won a few headers yesterday. Up until about the 70th minute, every single long ball hit by Joe Hart was aimed at him, a ploy sometimes used against Finnan. As I said he won a few headers, but any he didn’t he put enough pressure on Vassell to make sure nothing came of the move. The only time Vasell got the better of him was early on when he sped past him, but between him and Mascherano we got the ball back.

I thought he looked quite tired when chasing back yesterday which might explain why you think he was too slow. Possibly this could be because he’s adjusting to Rafa’s extremely tough first-team training regime after already having a long season with the reserves and the youth World Cup pre-season.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

if insua can make 20 starts all in next year we will get to see if he has what it takes to become the automatic 1st choice the following season.

All the reserves who have played in the first team have mentioned that the tempo in the first team is far more brutal than the reserves, so I'm not suprised he struggled late on. It took Babel close to 6 months to get into condition to play a full game. Luckily fitness is something that can be easily improved.
