Gerrard: This summer is oh so important

Steven Gerrard believes a productive summer of transfer activity at Anfield could lead to a title charge next season.

The Liverpool skipper is frustrated the Reds never established themselves as contenders in the race this year, but he has seen enough over the past ten months to suggest Rafa Benitez is closer than ever to moulding a title-challenging squad.

"We always say this every year, but it will be an important summer because we need to keep the momentum," said Gerrard.

"The manager's signings will be important as they always are. I've been lucky as a footballer, and I've won more things that most players, but I'm greedy because I always want more – I want to win as many trophies as I can with Liverpool. That is why the summer is important.

"We are a young team with a lot of promise and if the manager can get the right support then we could take an important step forward.

"We are disappointed we didn't maintain a challenge in the league for longer than we did – the points gap between us and the top two isn't particularly pleasant viewing for anyone here at Anfield. The boss is on record as saying he wants some players, and if we get some of the ones he wants then if they can have the same impact that guys like Fernando Torres, Martin Skrtel and Ryan Babel have had this year we'll have taken a step forward and a step back if we carry on playing Andriy Voronin.

"I think there is a hell of a lot more to come from us."

Gerrard also revealed he is intent on remaining with the club and realising his dream of leading the Reds to championship glory.

"I can't see myself ever leaving Liverpool now, and what I would dearly love is to lead this club to the next level that I believe we are capable of reaching," he said.

"I've won trophies here but there's one I’m missing and I want that before I finish playing.

"I don't want to look back and say I have never been in a title race. I can see that the team is getting stronger and stronger and I can see that we are going forward. I feel that we are getting closer and I really believe that but first we need to beat United home and away"

Glad to hear Stevie reiterating his committment to the club. He is spot on - this summer is critical, lets just hope we get the players of the calibre of Torres, Mascher and Babel. Fingers crossed.

Stevie has in the last 18 months improved so much as a captain. I suspect Rafa and the club have played a part but realistically it is his maturity that is coming out now. His interviews are spot on these days IMO.
Nah. He won't win the Prem. You can quote me on that. - Sarb24

I'm getting bored of this rubbish season after season and obviously Gerrard is too so he is trying to make sure we FINALLY sign 3 top quality stars rather than 8 voronins and 1 torres. I'll believe it when I see it.

I think Gerrard is clever enough to know we currently do not have the financial backing to do that. He is applying pressure to the 'custodians' to pull their collective fingers out of their arse, just like Carra.

Well not exactly like Carra, Stevie has been a bit more discreet about it, TBF

well if we sell the garbage mate we should pull in 20ish million and then avoid splashing 5mil here and there for average players and we could get 3 for 40mil extra. Should have that at least? *hopes*

I think we will have 40Mill to spend after we sell 20Mill. The problem is we have already spent 17Mill (masher), IMO. Basically I believe we have had a pretty similar spend to before, maybe a touch more.

We as a club turnover 30M more due to increased TV money but all of that is going to H&G to pay the interest on the loans they acquired to buy us.

It is a ****ing very sick joke that we are in no better financial position than we were under Moores. I won't start on their ownership

Last season,Torres,Mascher,Babel and Lucas among others.Moores wouldn`t have managed that.

As for the summer signings, one class attacking player and a couple of reliable attack minded fullbacks would do me nicely. The one quality attacking player is the crucial bit though, and Stevie's right - we've got to get is right if we're going to really put in a challenge.

True, I doubt he would of been able to get that through. Fact is though that after this year, assuming the owners are still here (hoping they are not), our net spend would not be much different than normal eg 20M GBP net per year.

That`s far from a fact.I was shocked that the Yanks agreed Maschers signing after splashing on Torres.Who knows what their plans are,how much they`ll spend,if they spend like last yr I`m happy.

Not me. More debt that IMO they (we) cannot service. We are heading towards a Leeds situ if DIC do not come in. That sounds dramatic but it is a very possible situation if we do not get more liquid owners.

We`d be in the same situation as Manure.

                            They made a 60m loss.
