He's had it in for Rafa for a while. Here's an earlier Gem

Whelan “Rafa was under pressure until the Klinsmann story came out, and then suddenly it just changed around in his favour,” he said. “He’s had some success but he’s spent 140 to 150 million pounds and not got even close to winning the league, and if you’re a Liverpool fan, that’s the one you want.
“A lot of fans believe he can do it, but I’m not so sure you can afford to give him another 50 million to see if he can. There are too many bad players. Who would you keep out of his signings? The goalkeeper, (Daniel) Agger and (Martin) Skrtel look good and (Fernando) Torres of course. Maybe (Javier) Mascherano and (Xabi) Alonso and Ryan Babel.“If I was the owners, I’d have too look at the situation seriously and think, what are we getting back for the 60 million we are spending.”

    Genius

Interesting to see people turn on an LFC legend and abuse him for having an opinion

I agree. Lots of fans share this view of Benitez, so why shouldn't Whelan be able to say what he feels too?

I wouldnt say McMahon was bitter. Lawernson, Beglin, McManaman, Redknapp seem to go out of their way to put liverpool down.

I was in America for the 2nd leg with chelsea and ESPN had Nicol as a pundit, he confused me. He predicted 2 - 0 to chelski but was also full of complements for liverpool and you could tell he was supporting us.

Surely if he can have that opinion we can have an opinion on his opinion! That's my opinion, anyway

Of course you can. Dont see the need for people to just outright abuse him though.

Not gonna lose sleep over it mind, it's just funny how the right to have an opinion differs according to what that opinion is

I'm not sure what people expect though

On one hand people always complain about Andy Gray being on TV and being openly biased, yet on the other hand people complain when our former players are on TV NOT being openly biased!

I don't think any of the above put Liverpool down.

I think the problem most people have is that the things he's quoted as saying are factually incorrect. If he has an axe to grind with Rafa his opinion would be much better received if it wasn't full of nonsense and spinning things to make him out to be worse than he is.

He is talking absolute gibberish. Infact I would be amazed if they are correct quotes. If they are his opinion it's not one I will look out for in future. He's a ****ing idiot, IMO of course.

Loved Ronnie as a player. I have many memories of him about 25 yards from goal putting Rushy in with a perfectly time pass. He was an under-appreciated great.
He should keep his mouth shut if that's all he's capable of, though.
I'm playing all the right notes. Not necessarily in the right order. I'll give you that, sunshine.

                              Absolutely.

And he does have an axe to grind with Rafa. It's been obvious for ages.

My problem with these idiotic ex-players (Smith, Houghton, McMahon, Whelan et al) is that their opinions seem to be borne out of xenophobia and that horrible "it's not as good as it was in my day" bollocks.

Most of them are failed managers yet for some reason think they're qualified to "back seat drive" where LFC is concerned.

Well, I've got news for them - they're ****ing not qualified....LFC legends or not.

They are entitled to their opinions but these opinions still carry a certain amount of weight. They're supposed to be supporters. If they must be so ****ing scathing, keep it ****ing quiet instead of rocking the boat even more and providing more ammunition for the drooling cunts in the media.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

I get what your saying. But a lot of the time these guys are being brought in as pundits specifically because they are ex-players. When you watch a match on sky there is always at least one ex-player pundit from each team.

I think Thomo should be the pundit on every liverpool game, now hes biased and doesnt give a ****! love it!
