Good point. I think the sub bench is going up to 7 from next season.

The bench is going up, but it'll still be a maximum of 3 subs, just with more players to choose from.

“When a match kicks off however, they will have to have six players on the pitch who are eligible for the national team of the country in question. Furthermore, the ‘6+5′ rule supports another European Law, namely regarding having the broadest and fairest possible competition and restricting the concentration of finances and economic monopolies.”

Rafa has also said he has to wait and see what comes of the FIFA meeting on this at the end of May before moving on transfers.

it would be anything but a fair competition when your passport ensures you'll get a job ahead of someone else even though you might be less qualified for it. that's discrimination in my book.
they hope to bring quotas to the game which only lowers the standard of the leagues if anything. if they'd invest a bit of the money they make in youth facilities all over the countries and get the kids out off the pubs and onto the pitches and give them a ball instead of lager cans and large fries we wouldn't even need to talk about quotas.

Your passport only ensures you have a better chance of getting on the pitch, it doesn't stop the foreign players earning a wage. Those that get left on the bench will still be paid. All it means is that clubs will not be bringing in sub-standard foreigners because they are cheaper (but they can still buy them if they want, so again the law is not being broken), but the best foreigners will still be able to play wherever they want.

This rule will not break any rules, and will be phased in, in my opinion.

Nothing wrong with that, and i think this law will go through no problem...which means getting top english players in, like Barry, now, before prices skyrocket, is crucial.
Sounds like in labour law terms this could be translated as "you can have a job irrespective of your EU nationality but if you don't have the "right" passport you have no chance of job enhancement or job success." I'd be interested to hear an employment lawyer's view on it.

Imagine the equivalent outside of football: We'll give you a job in our engineering firm but because you're Scottish and not English you won't get on any of the decent projects and you won't get any of the client exposure that you need for your CV and to build your career". - I suspect that one would contravene all sorts of EU labour laws.

However the law is an ass so let's wait & see. Could be a good reason to hang onto Guthrie, Pennant & Carson if the price is going up though.

Out of curiousity, what foreigners would you keep out of the ones we've got (or been strongly linked with) in a 6 english, 5 foreign rule?

              Reina
              Mascher
              Torres
              Agger
              Skertel
              Aurelio

              Reina
              Carra--Skertel--Agger--Aurelio
              Mascher--Barry
              ????--Gerrard--????

How would this law work with naturalised British citizens? If this law comes in could we then apply for players such as pepe, xabi, sami, etc to become naturalised citizens of the UK as they have been here for over 3yrs (not sure whether it is 3yrs or 5yrs).

Does anyone else think that the whole reason for this new law is to hamstring the premiership teams in the champions league?
Just look at the face: it's vacant, with a hint of sadness. Like a drunk who's lost a bet.

what about ireland, scotland and wales? would these be classes as foreign? if this rule is passed it wont come in for a few years as theres so much that will have to be taken into consideration i.e homegrown, changing citizenship etc

When Blatter says National Association then surely Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish would be considered "foreign"

Blatter is trying to be clever with semantics and it won't work.

Under the EU treaty, bluntly, there is no such thing as a "Foreign" EU citizen, you are not allowed to discriminate in any way against any EU national and that definitely includes trying to say you can only have a certain number of englishmen in a starting 11, in Europe there is no "English" where employment is concerned.

As an example, have a look at the wording that's going to be on new EU passports that reminds everyone that if you're in a country without an Embassy or Consulate of your "home" nation you are entitled to representation by *any* other EU country that does have one there.

Not so sure myself. Blatter is not stopping clubs from signing anyone, so there is no restriction of trade. But as FIFA/UEFA run european football, surely there is no way to stop them from implememnting certain rules of the game, like they have for the CL (so many players must be homegrown etc).

If the rule came in, they would have to be ENGLISH. Scots, Welsh and Irish would count as "foreign".
