He did as far I'm concerned.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

From what I hear, this lad is very consistent, has the physique to cope with the Premiership and has the technical ability. So he's basically another Finnan but a bit taller.

Also, the comments that Chelsea have spent £16m on Bosingwa and Scum are after Alves. Clearly, we don't have the money compared to the other two sides and had we spent £20m on a Alves, for example, people would have said: 'we should have spent that on a quality striker' or 'we should evenly distributed that money across Rafa's targets.' We can't have it both ways.

Is he any good in the air. I do think a weakness this season has been defensively we have dealt badly on occasion with set pieces and fullbacks who are good in the air would be helpful.

Yeah, I agree. Teams have looked at hitting the ball at the back post and getting on top of our fullbacks (Arbeloa, Aurelio, Finnan, Riise) who aren't good in the air at all.

Degen is over 6ft so I wouldn't think he would be bad in the air.

Kewell could no longer 'wing the ball' properly.

No, I don't agree to that all. I reserve my right to be ultra-critical and hopelessly unrealistic while wildly overestimating my ability to judge the worth of a professional footballer I've never seen play.

SWISS STAR TO SIGN FOR REDS
                            Paul Eaton 20 May 2008

Liverpool Football Club today confirmed that Swiss international defender Philipp Degen will sign a contract with the club on July 1.
The right sided full-back - who will represent his country at this summer's European Championships - is out of contract with Borussia Dortmund this summer and has opted to begin a new career on Merseyside from next season.

Degen, 25, spent four seasons in his homeland with FC Basel before his move to the Bundeslga and will provide competition for Steve Finnan and Alvaro Arbeloa in the right-back role at Anfield.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez said: "Philipp is still young but has gained great experience from playing in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and on the international stage with Switzerland. He also played in the Champions League during his time with Basel and so is used to top level football.

"He is an offensive player with great energy and a winning mentality. His strength is going forward and I am confident he will be prove to be a quality addition to our squad, even though some people think he's a bit ****"
                            ....not very rafa like

Looking ahead to the move, Degen said: "When I received the offer from Liverpool, there was no doubt I would accept it. They are one of the biggest clubs in the world and I am looking forward to the challenge of establishing myself there and playing in the best league there is."
                            Cheers

There's a video of him on his website http://www.degendegen.com - looks ok to me, especially against France where ha made Abidal look stupid a couple of times.

Also worth noting that whenever he receives the ball the crowd cheers in anticipation - like I said looks good in defence and can whip in a wicked cross to the back stick - looks like Finnan is on his way, shame really, prefer him to Arbeloa personally but he's not got the legs anymore..

Seeing that Switzerland is the host nation for Euro '08 I think we'll be seeing a lot of Phillip and his doppelganger David over the next month, at the end of the day for christ sakes we got him on a free, GRATIS.

May 20 2008 by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

PHILIPP DEGEN will become a Liverpool player when he signs a contract with the club on July 1.

The Swiss international right-back has been a long-term target of Reds boss Rafa Benitez, who is delighted to have got his man on a Bosman free transfer.

Degen is rated as one of the best players to emerge from Switzerland in recent years, although his progress stalled following a move to Borussia Dortmund from Basel in 2005.

Injuries and a loss of form have restricted his first team opportunities at the Bundesliga outfit over the last 12 months and the 25-year-old will look upon his move to Anfield as a chance to resurrect what was a hugely promising career.

Benitez, who was aware of Degen’s promise when he was manager of Valencia, is delighted to have snared the defender and believes he can make a positive difference to the Liverpool squad.

“Philipp is still young but has gained great experience from playing in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and on the international stage with Switzerland,” he said.

“He also played in the Champions League during his time with Basel and so is used to top level football.

“He is an offensive player with great energy and a winning mentality.

“His strength is going forward and I am confident he will prove to be a quality addition to our squad.”

Benitez added: “Sometimes you can find these players on the market.

“When you find a player like him who costs no money it means you can use money for improving other parts of the squad.

“He is a good signing, a player of potential, who can help us improve in the wide areas.”

Degen’s imminent arrival further reduces the chances of Liverpool landing long-time target Daniel Alves.

The Brazilian yesterday admitted the time has come for him to depart Sevilla – but Anfield is unlikely to be his destination.

Benitez tried to sign Alves two seasons ago but was thwarted when Liverpool’s bid was rejected by Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido and the Reds were unable to raise their offer.

Alves has now spoken of his desire to quit Sevilla at the earliest possible opportunity but with the club putting a price tag on him in excess of £20m Liverpool are likely to be ruled out of the race.

“I really want to leave now and I hope that everything will be finalised as soon as possible,” Alves said.

Meanwhile, Alvaro Arbeloa, one of four Liverpool players to make Spain’s squad for Euro 2008, says he is going into the tournament with a winning mentality.

“I’m very happy to be here, I’m really excited and I'm determined to do well,” he said. “I want to fully enjoy this experience and go far in the tournament.

“It’s important to think that we have to win, although we haven’t won much in Spain.

“That’s the right mentality. We know that we have to go bit by bit but the objective is to win Euro 2008.”

Fernando Torres, Xabi Alonso and Pepe Reina are also in Luis Aragones’ Spanish squad.

                                Sounds promising.
Klopp on LFC vs MUFC (March 9th 2016) - "This is why I love football. This is why we watched it when we were young. I can still not have enough of it."
