and his dislike for others is also.
I have just watched this, and you're right. I was pretty impressed with him, thought he came across quite well and like you say he seemed to have a genuine love for the club and was pretty proud to have played for us. However, it doesn't sit well with what he was saying a couple of months ago before the Chelsea CL semi.

I take back much of what I say below though. He seemed pretty genuine ln LFC tv.

BTw what did he say about Souness? I'm not surprised a legendary player like Souness was wouldn't give a talentless hack like him the time of day.

Speedie's 2 goals at the Annie Rd end against big Nev were just the ****in' biz. He teased the Everton fans after both goals and then pretended he thought they were our fans . Also did in 10min what it took Rushie years to do. Answers on a postcard. By the way I think Souness was the finest player I ever saw kick a ball for LFC(apart from Kenny!!!) nothing he can do or ever do will ever change my total adoration for the guy. ****in' legend. FACT!

Scored against Man U at OT.

Never saw Souness as a player for us, can only go on videos and what others tell - my Manc supporting boss says Souness was the dirtiest cunt around at the time. Anyway, my memories of Souness are solely as a manager, and there's no denying his reign was disastrous and shambolic.

Looking at Speedie's goals in the short time he was at Anfield, he finished them really well, but getting the ball in the net when the supply is being provided by John Barnes is one of the easiest jobs in the world.

Not by a long shot. The hardest? Without question. But he was never just a brainless clogger. He ruled more by intimidation and reputation than anything else, and could achieve just as much with a glare in the direction of an upstart opponent as he could by kicking them into the stand.

That's not to say that he couldn't put his foot in when required. He was just clever with it, and was a dab hand at avoiding the censure of referees. I don't remember him ever being sent off during his time at Anfield, although on a couple of occasions at least he was quite fortunate.
I recall Steve McMahon trying to prevent him taking a quick free kick in a game v Villa, by standing a yard away. Souness made to kick the ball but instead went completely over the top, studs down the shins, McMahon reacted by pushing Souness, so Kenny got involved as well. End result? McMahon was sent off, and Kenny and Souness exchanged telling smirks.

He was like the team leader, bodyguard, architect and totem rolled into one. He, more than anyone, provided Liverpool with a cloak of invincibility and a psychological superiority that has never been replaced. And that's not even mentioning his unsurpassed ability to direct a game, controlling its pace as he saw fit, maintaining possession as if the ball was attached to his boots by an invisible tram-line, and shielding his defence like an over-protective lioness watching over her cubs.

It's unfortunate, though inevitable, that his managerial shortcomings have overshadowed his achievements as a player. But I'm yet to see a finer midfield player, nor do I expect to any time soon.

**** me, I've heard people praising him before, but that that's one hell of eulogy. If that's the case, then it really is a shame that his managerial; record has tarnished his standing somewhat in the pantheon of Liverpool legends given that he was such an uncompromising and accomplished player. It's a shame to say as well, that as a person, he seems a bit of a cunt.

Actually, I know a few people who've met him (including my brother, who chatted with him in an airport queue) and everyone says he's a very nice fella, happy to talk and seemingly quite friendly.

It must just be footballers he has a problem with.

I rate Souness as one of the best pundits.

Read his auto biog and he admits he sold too many of the aging stars. But he felt they were asking too much money and after a big pay day. Did get the feeling he and Jan don't get on also after reading Jan's biog.
Although i don't rate him as a manager mainly due to him wanting 11 sounesses on the pitch, he did inherit an ageing squad that should of had a few changes the year before and was at the end of an era.

Heard the prob with injuries was he insisted on players wearing flip flops in the changing rooms.

His explaination of the peice in the scum paper seems a valid one and sure he mentions a legend that ghosts writes for it.

Care to elaborate on the last piece mate?

regardless, there's no excuses for the drop ball with Speedie incident noted above, if of course that did happen.

was in an article i saw regarding an ex player from shanks era ghost writing in the scum paper - don't want to say names as I can't remember the exact details but was on the lines of being hypocritical.
