    How Refreshing

We are actualy taking a stand in the transfer market and not being held to randsome by clubs like Aston Villa.

I've already made my views clear in my thread 'The Keep Xabi Alonso Thread' and I'm so pleased that we aren't going to pay a ridiculous price for a player who won't add much to our team.

The only way this transfer will happen is if we sell Alonso and if it does happen without selling Alonso then we are absolute mugs as we need to speand the money on other positions.

I think we are in the driving seat with this transfer now Barry has stated his intentions, it means they take our offer or lose millions by being over stubborn and over-valuing the player.

Agreed. I'm not totally taken with the fact that we're after someone like Barry in the first place, but to bend over for Villa completely when they're just being ridiculous over the price would be a step too far in my opinion.

If they don't want to do business I don't see why we should be prostituting ourselves for Gareth Barry. Leave him there and let them deal with his discontent if that's the way they want it.

It's good that we are taking a stand I agree with that. But we took a stand on Simao and on Alves and missed out on them both. In the case of Alves we really should have just paid up the extra money and given in to their demands. Sometimes it works for you, sometimes it doesnt.

Would you really want us to take a similar stand if we were £2m short of David Villas asking price?

I'd sell my own grandmother to fund a move for David Villa, but for Gareth Barry I'd have walked away the minute MON started being such a crying ****** over it all.

Villa and Barry, two entirely different players and propositions, you can't really compare.

Thats my point really though its not about taking a stand in general, its about taking a stand because no one is that arsed about signing the player anyway!

Exactly, and the only reason people are "refreshed" by it is that they personally weren't too keen on him signing in the first place. If the player in question was David Villa everyone would be up in arms about it.

I was gonna say. Although I agree in this instance by refusing to pay £18m for Barry, we've been doing it for years - most notably with Daniel Alves when the proposed fee was about £15m and we refused to pay it. FFS.

Agreed. I'd also add that this takin a stand issue is only a result of us not selling Alonso as yet. If that deal would of been struck by now, negotiations over Barry would have been concluded by now, IMO.

Well yes, and that's perfectly understandable. No point haggling over a second rate player for ever while the price reaches silly levels. There is point pushing the boat out for top class talent.

It's about people getting all high and mighty about the principle of not being held to ransom, but they would happily drop those principles the second a player they are desperate to sign comes along. Double standards, that's all I'm saying.

Spend that bit extra on key purchases (Alves/RM/etc). Don't get held to ransom on squad purchases. Sounds pretty reasonable.

Has this been confirmed that we're not signing him?

(i think he's ok but MASSIVELY over priced)
                              We come not to play.
