Alonso, simply a different class of player to Barry.

Everyone seems to be talking about gareth barrys set pieces but if he is so good why does ashley young take all the free kicks at villa? Also Xabi can put in good quality if gerrad would let him take a few.

Barry has been better than xabi, in the PL, for one season, last season. I think Barry over-performed for 6 months while xabi under-performed. I think they'll both find their level again this year with Xabi the better player.

alonso hasnt played well for 18 months imo
better to have players over performing in anyones book
you never know they may get confidence and continue to play like that

But despite the re-writing of history since he was linked, Barry was no great shakes the season before last, or before that. Anyone would think he was a world beater, rather than a good slogger for a mid-table club, listening to output from the Barry bandwagon.

Let's see what difference a few pre-season games make

Quite a bit it would seem.

Well he was Villa's player of the year that season, if that means anything.

Going on form over the last two seasons, it has to be Barry without a boubt

I think that a lot of teams have sussed Alonso out and not given him time on the ball to dispose of his deadly passes that he does so well.

His game is more suited to the la liga imo where he'll get more freedom on the ball imo

I'm probably wrong and talking a load of ****e but, we will soon find out eh

No world beater it's true, but the only player (apart from Beckham) to have been picked by every England manager since 2000 would suggest that he's hardly a 5 minute wonder.

I think Barry would add more options to our current squad and make better use of what we have. In a straight swap all else being equal right now I'd rather have him. In the future if we could buy (or players within the squad develop into) top quality attacking midfield options who run from deep and have good control then Xabi might well make us into a better team. There are too many 'if we .....' for Xabi to star in our current team so logically I would go for Barry. I would however love it if Alonso stepped up and the team developed around him.

I'm more than happy to keep Alonso but without the Barry switch we need another player at least in the squad for the sake of balance.

I think people forget that xabi was out for most of the season with injury when they say his form was poor last season.

                            quite possibly

but the fact remains we need change to go forward - having the same midfield wont propel us up to the top imo - barry may or may not work but its worth a chance at the right dough

I think we'll start to see the old Xabi back these season given the chance. I just feels it in my waters.

Xabi is world class and out of form. The only way is up.

Barry is good, but looks great as he's had some fantastic form. The only way is down.

I'd rather we take a chance on giving Xabi another season. If he's still out of sorts Barry is another year on in his contract and cheaper.

It's only Villa. Doesn't really mean a great deal

That's like saying Gonzalez was the best player in Chile. Still didn't cut it did he?
