No fabio for reds in france.

Fabio Aurelio has been ruled out of Liverpool's Champions League Group D opener against Marseille on Tuesday night.

The Reds touched down in the south of France on Monday lunchtime following a 90 minute flight from John Lennon Airport as they step up preparations for the start of their European campaign for this season.

Rafael Benitez has brought an eighteen man squad to face a Marseille side who are currently unbeaten in the French league and lying in second place after five games.

But Brazilian defender Aurelio - who excelled against Manchester United at the weekend - has been left behind on Merseyside to nurse a minor calf injury picked up during the 2-1 victory on Saturday.

Javier Mascherano has travelled though, despite limping off at the weekend, while Lucas returns to the squad after arriving back from international duty.

Liverpool squad: Reina, Cavalieri, Arbeloa, Degen, Carragher, Skrtel, Agger, Dossena, Mascherano, Alonso, Gerrard, Benayoun, Babel, Lucas, Riera, Kuyt, Torres, Keane.

It's only minor but the lad is cursed. Dossena is a very good back up to have though and should slot right in. Good squad we have for this one and if we play like we did Saturday, then I would not be suprised if we gave them a good beating again.
Oh the man is a midfield maestro
and his passes are sooo delightful

Shame for the lad. Must have been close to his longest run without injury.
I'm playing all the right notes. Not necessarily in the right order. I'll give you that, sunshine.

I like to hope we are largely protecting him. If he so much as feels a vague twinge we are clearly better off resting him. Especially as we just bought in a player in his position who needs games and Agger or at a push Carragher could cover for him.

Good point Degen would have been left out otherwise. He should start against Stoke.

i want to see more of dossena, he needs games, maybe europe will get him going.

fabio linked up well with riera, it will be a chance for rafa to test the water with riera/dossena

                looking forward to it

                    I'd play Degen against Crewe.

Looks like there's no protecting Mascher, he's in!
Obviously his injury wasn't as bad as 1st thought...
Thanks for the memories Rafa - YNWA!
