    And about time too

LIVERPOOL and Everton fans were warned today they could be prosecuted for “criminal chanting” at this month’s two Merseyside derbies.

They could be thrown out of the ground and charged for singing inappropriate songs.

Police are taking action after unsavoury terrace chants at recent derbies, and are involved in talks with the Crown Prosecution Service.

Liverpool and Everton meet in a Premiership game on Monday evening and the following Sunday afternoon in the FA Cup, both at Anfield.

One song is said to be of particular concern to police, whose football intelligence officers will draw up a dossier of chants.

Police today warned they would remove offenders from the ground and seek bans.

Officers are to speak to both clubs asking them to present a united front against unacceptable abuse from the stands.

Football commander for Merseyside police Chief Supt Dave Lewis said: “We will speak to the CPS to see if what is sung is viewed as abusive.

“We could arrest people and charge them. We won’t be arresting hundreds as we haven’t got the resources to do so and could prompt a mêlée.

“Some of the singing can be abhorrent and we have to draw a line under it.”

The action comes in the wake of alleged racist and homophobic chanting directed at Portsmouth defender Sol Campbell during a match against former employers Tottenham Hotspur.

A number of people were charged by Hampshire police.

Everton FC spokesman Ian Ross said: “We always urge our fans to behave appropriately, not just at derby games, but at every match.

“At a previous derby at Anfield there was some pretty unpleasant chanting from both sets of supporters, although it was not racist or homophobic.”

There was no-one available to comment at Liverpool FC.

Not sure how realistic it is, but good luck to them.

Yes. I wish them every success. This needs stamping out.
I'm playing all the right notes. Not necessarily in the right order. I'll give you that, sunshine.

The chanting is a disgrace and needs to be stopped but locking people up or sending them through the courts isnt the way. It should be the fans sitting around these people that speak up and regulate this behaviour. Unless someone is being violent or racist I don't want big brother following me to the match.

But if the fans won't do it/are scared of doing it ... and big brother follows you a lot these days anyway.

what counts as inappropriate chanting/singing though? obviously the homophobic and racist part was covered so what else is there?

Your right, it's a sad fact that big brother is following us more and more. Its an even sadder fact that as a family of supporters we can't teach the idiots the right way to behave the way it would have been done on the terraces.

Its a shame - it is much harder to "stand up" for decency when you are sitting down. When I was a youth, there was a lot of accumulated wisdom in the Kop. Every now and then some youngster (myself included!) would burst out with something stupid. Usually some bloke nearby would give a quiet explanation and the youth would learn.
Nowadays, with the way of society, the seating policy .... and to an extent, the lack of a title for so long ... I cannot see that happening. Maybe I'm just turning into an "old git".

                    What's the chant?

I always thought Mcfadden being gay, Neville inbred and Lescott being ugly was fair game.

That's what I was wondering. I've never heard the McFadden one, so I'm guessing it's that one as homophobic chanting is illegal. Calling Neville inbred and Lescott ugly isn't illegal though, particularly as those chants are factually correct.

The trouble with clamping down is that most of the truly offensive chants are neither racist nor homophobic (the old Beckham ones, the Blue****e's Gerrard one, the John Terry one etc.) so I can't see how you can stop it.

Me too - shame because I used to like it. It's hard because my uncle is a blue, and he can't understand the way things have gone recently. He's still one of the "friendly rivalry" ones, who would want to see us doing well so long as Everton are always doing better. They used to be the majority, but not any more.

I'm not suggesting that racist and homophobic chanting is even remotely acceptable but stopping people chanting anything remotely offensive is going to turn football in to Disneyland.
