The critics will be out for Zonal again

Devastated after the game and am trying to make sense of it. Obviously Essien bossed the game and Drogba made sh1t out of Carra and Skrtal, but what about the 1st 2 goals.

Just watching the analysis on RTE there and as expected the old Zonal Marking has been raised...

I have been trying to figure out how many goals we have conceded from corners so far this season before tonight, I think this is accurate:

    PSV away
Hull home? (Was McShane's 1 from a corner?)
    Newcastle away
    Boro away

To me that doesnt seem like a lot to give away but maybe it is? every 2nd goal Arsenal give away seems to come from a corner, does anyone know if there are any stats on it?

Tonight looked like 2 players getting lazy and not doing their job in Stevie and Xabi. but maybe they did their part and it is the guys on the 6 that should have attacked the ball?
I like to lurk, if that's ok with you

Our stats conceding from corners are excellent. It's not zonal as such, just the players on the night (last night). Letting Ivanovic in twice in one game is criminal though

Andy Gray couldn't wait to open his gob about zonal marking when Ivanovic equalised.

I was at the game so couldn't tell what happened at the time but have just seen it again on Sky, Alonso loses him for the 1st one and he gets between Riera and Skrtel so the fault either lies positionally or with Alonso and Riera becasue Riera shouldn't allow the ball to travel that far, for the 2nd one it seemed like Gerrard lost him and I remember watching Kuyt take Ivonovic out off the ballon a later corner so clearly we didn't do the jobs properly.
Zonal gets a load of **** but how many free headers did Porto have against utd the other night and they go man for man

It does my head in, its like other teams don't concede from corners or set pieces or something. The fact that over the last 5 years we've probably conceded the fewest goals is completely lost on these retards.

The zonal marking thing becomes a problem when players leave their brains behind and don't respond to obvious danger and chose to instead stay rooted to the spot like bloody statues.

Zonal marking works for the most part.

"If Gerrard continues to play up front, leaving this lack of creativity and intelligence in Midfield, the season WILL be over by Xmas."

I still don't think we'll finish in the top 4 this season."

We were just defensively useless last night & we also missed Mascher a hell of a lot...

Wasn't looking forward to you updating your signature, Zonal does work, it's just letting their players run in twice is criminal. We slipped up, move on try to do better next time. I would however, like to see Agger come in and get a game!

No system is perfect and can always be beaten. The 1st was just a perfect ball matched by a perfect run...

The 2nd was just terrible execution of the system by us.

I have a question on it though. It seems we line up with 4 along the 6 yard line... and one smaller guy in the 6 yard box. What is his purpose in the scheme of things?

Can someone fill me in here? I thought with zonal marking it works in open play but come corners it reverts to man marking? Is that correct, because if it is it may be an argument FOR zonal marking as 2 of our goals came when it wasn't being utilised.
"That's how I found myself on the Kop that day I had my blue-and-white scarf safely tucked away inside my coat as I listened to Liverpool songs and swayed with the masses.

Then City scored and I screeched and this big bloke, a Liverpool supporter, made towards me and I thought he was going to throttle me. But he just pulled my scarf from under my coat so it lay on the outside, and said: "You should always be proud of your colours, lad."

I read that in the 2006 Champions Lg finals Knock out stages 15 of the 16 teams used Zonal Marking

But if players are given 'zones' for set pieces, all somebody needs to do is run through them as the ball is coming in and if the attacker gets lucky it'll come to him.

It's hard to defend when you're static but somebody's running at you from all sorts of angles.

I agree with you to a point. Ivanovic proved that....twice, which is quite embarrasing really since Cahill did the exact same thing not so long ago. But i thinks it too flippant to blame it soley on zonal marking (if we were man marking i dont think last night would have been much different), I believe it can be highly effective when utilised properly, meaning as soon as a player enters your 'zone', stick to him like a fly on **** and do everything in your power to make his job as difficult as possible.

Unfortunately I have blame it on poor defending (lack of strengh and vision) and not having a player who's strong enough in the air in the box.... like Sami. Carra and Skrtel (as were a good few players) where ****in bossed last night and I dont think i saw anyone jump with Ivanovic to challenge for either goals. We were simply outclassed and outsmarted in the box. We deserved all we got.

Spot on. First goal was excellent execution, the second just plain horrendous defending.
