Give or take a couple of goals, Gerrard's goalscoring has been just as prolific during the seasons when he has played right wing/centre mid. Due to the inevitable change in personell, I don't think that the Gerrard/Torres partnership IS necessarily unbreakable.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think he has had his best season on the Right, next in the hole and is at his least effect in CM although still excellent my most standards

Last season was his best in terms of goals. In terms of performance 2003/04 showed what he can do in CM by dragging us to 4th place on his own. We were rubbish that season and he was incredible. In my eyes he is the best CM in the world.

Goals wise he now takes all the free kicks he likes and all the penalties. He sets about ten a season from these dead ball situations. I think if he played CM he would still get about 7 from open play. So he would still get around 17 goals a year.

So I could accept Stevie playing CM. But we would have to be bringing in a top class striker if we were doing so to make it worthwhile. If that was David Villa I think it would be. He would easily get enough goals to make up for the short fall in Gerrards total. And we would not be losing out in the understanding with Torres.

My biggest worry is how Kuyt and Babel (Riera would be fine) would adapt to 442. Would they have as much freedom as they do?

i think rafa will be flexible throughout the season - also, gerrard and torres might be injured during the season so we need options in my opinion (although this is where kuyt becomes invaluable in my view as babel could play right hand side, with filling in for either gerrard or torres if needed)

however, how about a formation like this:

point i am trying to make is that although gerrard and torres is a partnership that we should keep intact, we have endless possibilities and the formation and personnel will change throughout the season
