The thing is, we should'nt win the league. Football is all about money, well, at least success in football is. A **** manager can win the league with money, a great manager will not win it without. With what we've spent building this current squad, we should be finishing 5th this season, behind Man Utd, Chelsea, Citeh and Spurs. We have the added bonus that Citeh and Spurs are constructing new sides, so will have a bedding in period, however this doesn't mean that they will definitely faulter. We do however, have a great manager and he may be able to inspire our squad to a finish higher than we should, as he did last season.

This isn't sour grapes. I'm fully aware of the hypocrisy that would exist if I believed that it was unfair on LFC that the likes of Utd, Citeh and Chelsea are in such an advantageous position financially, as we still have to accept that we have enjoyed a significant advantage over others, allowing us to win a few titles along the way. The reality of our current situation is that those trophies that we've enjoyed will become less frequent in the coming years should G&H remain, as others become stronger finacially and that is a genuine fear. We will have to learn to find enjoyment and satisfaction in smaller achievements as they will be just as hard fought as our greastest achievements. Sad times ahead, but this is the beginning of the downfall of LFC unless we too are fortunate enough to find significant investment.

"If Gerrard continues to play up front, leaving this lack of creativity and intelligence in Midfield, the season WILL be over by Xmas."

I still don't think we'll finish in the top 4 this season."

That is spot on. It used to be that a team earned it's money through success and won the league that way. But ever since Jack Walker won the league for Blackburn there has been an inevitable move towards this becoming the rich mans league.

Man Utd had their success at just the right time in this money driven era and have built the clubs furture foundations on this, always trying to progress commercially and always looking to expand the stadium to increase revenue. Liverpool never did this when they had their success, though it could be argued the game wasn't so awash with money then.

Arsenal are another team floundering but managed to get a new stadium in for their troubles and so should have a decent stream of income in years to come. LFC will be left kicking their feet in the dust.

All this worry about Man Utd beating our 18 title mark. If the current owners stay the same (or the financial market alters favourably) it will only be a matter of time until we are taken over.

Ok, lets try for a few positives.

Full backs - both can still improve but what looked to be problem positions for years could really be sorted for the long term on the evidence so far.

In the middle, Agger will be a massive player for us this season if and when we can get him consistently fit. I think he makes a huge difference to us in possession and allows the midfield to move forward in a way they can't otherwise. Aquilani on paper is just the sort of player we need alongside Mascher, and Torres/Gerrard will come into form.

We almost always start the season slowly under Rafa, usually draws are the problem but still. If we can just scrape wins in the next couple on the bounce I have faith that we'll play ourselves into form, we've too many good players not to, and still be there or thereabouts come May. Its a huge shame that Rafa wasn't backed this summer by the owners to go out and bring in one or two more players of genuine stature, which would have made a massive difference, but with everyone fit our first team still has the capability to make a big impact on this league.

There, was that at all convincing?
I could not dig, I dared not rob:
Therefore I lied to please the mob.
Now all my lies are proved untrue
And I must face the men I slew.
What tale shall serve me here among
                            Mine angry and defrauded young?

                              I'll try and help convince

I agree 100% with that bit there. Win our next four games and we will be in a much better position. The start to the season for me has never been about putting teams to the sword and running away with the league. I knew that was never going to happen. I have always had it down as a damage limitation exercise until Aquilani was ready to step in. Alonso made our team tick, and I think he will have the same positive effect.

But more so down to that by mid October when he is back, Agger will also be back and our players who played in the Confed cup will have had enough time to get match fit by then.

We then have to hope our main players stay fit.

If you want to challenge for the title, Villa at home is an 'easy' game. But we ****ed it up. We're on the brink of being out of the title race now.

It's literally 6 or 7 wins on the bounce that's needed now, to stay on course. We know from experience how unrealistic it is to expect to overturn 10-15 point defecits. If we won 7 in a row, we'd be on 24 points from 10 games, or 2.4 per game. Over 38 league games, that'd equate to 91.2 points, which isnt far off what will be needed.

That means we'll have to go to Chelsea and win, as well as beating the mancs at anfield. Pull that off, and we're back in business. Fail to do that, and we'll be well off course. Let's be honest, it's a massively tall order.

I'm not expecting it to happen and if i'm being brutally honest, as things stand now, top 4 isnt currently a foregone conclusion.
