    THE Lucas thread

Not the worst tonight by any means but how long does the manager keep faith in a player clearly not up to the job in the fulcrum of the team?

He's been here 2 years and yet looks like he only arrived last week and is still over awed by it all. It's nice that he follows the managers instructions to the letter but we need more industry and invention from that position, especially given he has licence to get involved in the game with Masch covering behind him.

    Harsh.

He's actually been quite decent until that freak goal, seems to have knocked his confidence. I'm not necessarily saying he's good enough but I don't think he's been the problem so far this season.

One of the most feeble footballers I've ever seen wear the shirt. A woeful, woeful player.

Well okay, from the available players in our squad at the moment who would you rather see play there?

Looking at the bigger picture I'd say he's a big problem. It's easy against Stoke when they let you have the ball but when teams are on right on top of him he lacks the physical and mental attributes to get in the game. We need a player to dicate our play not hide. Masch tried tonight but he doesn't have the vision or passing range.

Sadly at the moment the only options are Gerrard (therefore depleting our attack), Benayoun (creative but lightweight) and Plessis (untried due to Rafa's reluctance to blood players bar a "special" few).

I don't think Lucas tried to hide today. Our front 4 was pretty appalling, they lost almost every ball they got, especially in the first half. It wasn't easy.

I'm afraid Mascherano's ability with the ball is a more glaring weakness without Alonso in the team, but I think the criticism on Lucas is unfair because it basically comes down to "He's no Alonso". You could argue that Masch is appreciated for his performance today because that's what he's expected to do and then when Lucas has the ball, people are expecting him to launch perfect 40 yard through balls to an open man.

Lucas didn't have a good game but so did nearly everyone else.

He's not up to it, how much more evidence do we need?

I sometimes think people defend him just for the sake of it.

                        Not another Lucas bashing thread.

People have to accept he's not a replica of Alonso, and he was never bought as a replacement for Alonso, he's young and relatively inexperienced and plays a different role in the team to the one Alonso did. Again I think people are critisising Lucas because he isn't Alonso which is unfair.

He put in a good performance against Stoke and started well tonight, the OG sapped his confidence IMO and I think one of the senior players (probably Gerrard as Captain) should have gone over and had a word with him telling him not to dwell on it etc. It's easy to understand why his confidence would drop because he knows he only has to make one mistake and the fans are on his back.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Feel sorry for him really, he'd been doing really well (in pre-season and the games so far) and then scored an o.g He did that great turn though, proof he's Brazilian afterall :bird:

To me it seemed as if we looked to bypass midfield whenever possible and get Lucas forward, but our front four just never really got going at all and lost the ball constantly as JohnDoe said. I don't blame Lucas tbh. He didn't hide. Keep it up lad.

Lucas scored an OG, Gerrard conceded a pen. **** it

I don't care if he's a replica of Alonso or not, he's just not good enough to play for Liverpool. He lacks the physical and mental strength and is just a bits and pieces player. I doubt he'd get anywhere near the bench of most other top sides.
